Howdy.......... just placed an order for the 2990DX. Yea! I noticed some competitor sites had two prices, regular and "tweaked & Tuned", ready to scream. What exactly does that mean and what do they do to the radio? |

It is a quick way to make money. Tweeked and Tuned means someone else (CB Shop) Converted the radio and tuned if for max power. You can do it yourself in minutes. Either by watching a Tips and Tricks Video or ask me... |

Myself? I have been doing it for over 21 years , Yourself? It is a snap , Buy a power meter and a dummy load and you are off and running. Most if not all "Modification / CB Tricks" books cover everything you need to know. There is NO MAGIC to peaking CB's EXCEPT if you are in the market to make money. Now some CB shops will argue with this however most of the "MAGIC" they produce is not from the radio but the "TEST EQUIPMENT" being so far out-a-wack that a real 5 watt radio reads 50 watts...What would YOU rather "SEE" on a power meter 5 or 50????? |

307 i want to buy the 2990Dx myself but i want 11 meter as well with 24-32mhz coverage but i get so confused cause all these sights on the web make it very hard to figure what i need one place has it for $575 another for $700 "TURBO TUNED" and i read the forum they use and hear all those are coming back for overheating and such i just want the radio with the full coverage of 24-32mhz and aligned to run from that not TURBO TUNED or SCREAMING or turned up just the frequency,,which from what i understand is as simple as just adding a module to a 3 wire pig tail behind the face plate and thats been a nightmare cause everyone says i need the DX1 or DX2 or DX3 model i even called rci they said i need the export version which is the DX3 but everyone on other forums say noooo that was just a salesman so now i have no clue what to buy to make sure i get what i want,,, in simple I WANT THE NEW 2990DX WITH COVERAGE FROM 24-32 MHZ NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS is it that hard? cant it be easy? and yes i know the rules on this radio usage but thats my responsibility right?? |

Well unfortunatly I have not played with the 2990DX however , I am sure it is like the 2950DX which I have played with many. The mod is simple and is done in either of two ways. 1) Move the black jumper 2) Add the little module that comes with it. The radio is capable of 24 - 30 or 32 Mhz and all that you need to do is right in front of you. As for power , if you need a little more , turn up the "Power Adjustment Pot" in the radio. The reason "some" radios get hot is because people tend to turn them up all the way. The real way is to turn it up about 50% to 60% of full power and that is it. They will do 100 to 125 watts. The "ALC" control and "AMC" control pots are marked , one is for AM Modulation , the other is for SSB Limiting. Again there is no magic to the process and all the fancy mods that cast a lot of $$$ do not need to be performed. |

MY RCI gets hot even when i'm not talking the 2990 was modified maxed tuned and now can't use it it gets so hot had to use an external fan but that won't even work now. The built in power is the problem but other people have the same radio no problem sent it back till they wouldn't accept it no more, they Export Radios never did fix it right as long as i had it it only works a few months and over heats. What can i do love my RCI but who can fix it?// |

Well Copper Fan , You got it right , You can turn up the power on SSB since it not a constant carrier and it will work fine. However don't turn it up all the way to leave some "breathing" room. Tha AM modulation can also be adjusted as you want. Be carefull with the AM Power. Set it to about 50% to 60% AM dead key...You got it...Have fun and let me know!!! |

Susan , I have an agreement not to "bash" anyone and am going to stick to it , however you are in a position that your radio no longer works. The problem is simple . The reason it gets so HOT is because the power supply voltage was most likely turned up. This is done because the 2SC2879 or 2SC2219 output transistors desire a voltage of greater than 14 volts to put out MAX power. The regulators have to withstand more current. They just can't get rid of the heat fast enough (in laymens terms). In the idle mode (not transmitting) they still must dissipate the difference in voltage (collector/emitter) (input/output)so they will get hot even in the receive mode. The purpose of this area of the forum is to do anything we can to help people in the area of CB. I would be happy to tell you what you can do. You may email me direct at tech307@iglou.com |

Copper Fan , You may turn up the SSB Power adjustment , The AM Power adjustment (50%-60% Dead key) and the AMC (AM Modulation Control). Leave everything else the same and you will be just fine. Please let me know. |

307, What are your opinions on the Uniden Grant LT ? I have heard they are better in some respects than the Cobra 148 GTL. What changes would you consider doing to the Grant LT to enhance tranmit and receive ? |

Charles S , The Grant LT has had some changes in it but for the money is still a pretty good radio. I have noticed that some of the front controls are a little different as far as the "tightness" of the potentiometers. The inside is pretty much the same and can be peaked up just like the Grant. In most cases a "real" 12 watts on AM and about 16 or so on SSB can be achieved with little effort. |

Hey Susan, have yout tried unkeying occasionally?? Just kidding. But actually, if you but a small fan(the 5 inch fans you can buy at any Wal-Mart, Dollar General etc.) will really help keep the radio cool. I have had a 2990 in the past and never had a problem. I'm not going to mention any name, but I bought mine from the same people as you. The T**** T*** worked fine for me. Of course, I never key down for more than 10-20 seconds at a time. But whenever I got long winded, I simply turned on the fan. I had that rascal for 2 years before someone wanted to buy it from me. I may buy another one day. |

FOR SUSAN METTERT, susan the reason that 2990 is running hot is EEI did a all out peak and tune without changing/up grading some important area's in the radio to make it able to handle this kind of power.it can do it now but its going to shorten the life of the rig.EEI is known in the more professional tech/hobbiest circles for very optomistic wattage claimes, poor service, radio's that fail prematurely and BULL Sh177ing thier costomers. thier is a way to get alot more than 100-125 watts from a 2970/2990/saturn turbo. i did mine! it will do 230 watts max i turned it back down to around 200 watts as not to push it to hard. i got this mod from john mahoney he is awesome with ranger radios.it requires alot of modifications to the rig but if you want a real 150-200 watt 2990 that wont die prematurly this is the way to go. in short you beef up the power supply,VR'S,AF AMP RE BIAS THE mod limiter, ect if interested either post here saying so or email me for info id be glad to share it with you to keep you from dealing with EEI again and getting ripped off again! later bullet |
