If you are tuning an AM for peak output, and were to "consider" a 250 watt amp behind it..would you tune it as if it had no amp...or do you set it up different so as to not drive it(the amp) too hard???(more input watts than it needs?) |

For what its worth, The thing that is most important is have a low dead key, most amps like a low dead key 2-3 watts so the amp and the radio both work easy and last a long time and sound good! |

Also there are some high drive amps that need high dead key (as example ) Palomar 400 HD which can take up to 7 watts dead key but work better with 4 to 5 watts input. My Nitro 700 can take up to 40 watts dead key input but performs better at 25 to 30 .Of course the Nitro was designed to be to be driven with a driver. On the other hand if I put over 2 watts deadkey into my Skeleton 100 the relays will go crazy.Buying a radio with varible power is almost a must if you plan on running a lot of different amps. |

One watt certainly won't hurt it but it probably won't perform as well as it could unless you're swinging a good many watts into it.I have a test I do on amps I'm not familiar with.I introduce a one watt dead key into it and see what the meter reads.I keep doing this one watt at the time .After each watt increase I audio into it and watch to see how much swing it has. When I get to a point where the dead key causes the amp to put out wide open and have no swing , I back off of the dead key a watt or two and run the amp. |
