Ok here is my prob. '85 toyota p/u, 4cyl, 2x, 5spd, uniden grant xl, power mic, belden 9913 coax; When the engine is running on my mobile, I have engine noise ( no big deal truck needs tune up) Disconect coax from radio( all noise stops, as it should I guess) run a test lead from coax shield (pl-259) to bare metal I get sparks. THe radio doesn't even have to be on for this to happen, I am currently looking for better grounds, to work with, so I will update this.
However if ANY one has run into this kind thing before, PLEASE let me know I don't want to be able to have a 4th of July show inside my truck.
I don't have an electric personality and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks,
Walter

Walter,
with the radio on and touching the grounded wire to the pl connector does the radio get louder and /or radio lights get brighter?it sounds like the negitive side of your power cord is not grounded properly.or maybe where you have the ground wire attached to the truck is being grounded when you attach the wire to the radio.

Dennis, If I understand what you said I should go out and touch the Negative lead from the battery to the pl connector and see what happens.
Right?

Ok , I have run a new ground from the bumper(the one w/ the ant. on it)The shield to ground voltage is .01mv; the shield to ground ohm reading is 28.2ohms, the shield to batt. neg. reading is about 39.1ohms.
I need another ground wire right?

ok After adding two (so far) ground wires the problem is going away, now I just need more ground strap(ran out and my parts store is closed on sundays, now)lol. I'm planning to ground the trans./frame, and the engine/frame (I'll give it one more there.)and planning to build a cap. dischage for alt. maybe that will elim. alt. whine

808,and 291, thanks for the advice, and for being so patient w/ me, When I'm done grounding and cap.discharge I'll post results, on the whine.
Many thanks guys, you guys are wonderful,
Walter

Ok, I'm back, just got done w/ the alt. whine( goes gooood w/ pepperjack.... J/K) N-E-ways,back to the whine. I went to the alt. and tried a condenser there, Didn't work. Tried the headlights( whine gets worse w/ headlights on), no avail. Finally(just for grits and shins) tried the condenser between the pos. post on the batt. and the neg on the batt. Viola no more annoying whine. Now I can drive at night and hear all the silence( except for the plug wires popping lol tune-up is next). This forum is the best, I haven't found another place online that is as helpful as here. Y'all kick tail. Keep up the great work. I'll be coming around here for a long time.
Thanks,
Walter

Thats very strange since the battery is a capacitor and should be a much more efficient filter than a condensor. You might want to polish up your battery leads instead.

I just found out that my toy has a salvaged title. So maybe the idiot that put it back together did so w/ bubblegum and bobbie pins.
I keep finding wires just taped togther, or w/ wire nuts. A buddy of mine handed me a very big cap and told me to run everything to that, He said it was 100,000 microferet?? not sure about the microferet, but it does say 100,000 50vdc on the case, now I definatly have nomore whine.

Alt whine came back. and at one point got worse; it was real bad at 2,000 revs with the lights on.

I finally got rid of about 99% of my alt whine; used a jumper from the neg side of the plug to the chassis.
