I just picked up a uniden washington, its suppost to be new in the box anyway I was wondering what modifications you recommend to this unit,I would like it clear and loud, what power mike do you recommend, what do you think of the galaxy base power mike, I've ordered a x-force 20012hd to use with it and plan on someday using this to drive a bigger amp well I think thats enough questions for now! I'm a new guy with alot of dumb questions and no one else to ask? Doug

i reccommend crystal switching to modify that radio for extra channels. the most popular version of this is the "expo kit". it is basically a small pc board with two extra mixing crystals on it. one for the band below ch.1, one for the band above ch.40. there are other freq. mods around but they only give you low channels unless you change out the crystal. i dont know where to get one of these kits these days, but if you're new to modifying radios, you should let a tech. do the mod, as it usually requires some retuning and that requires test equipment. i think you would be happy with the NPC (negative peak compression) mod. this will give your radio the low dead key that your amp needs, and will be quite loud. this is another mod that requires a tech. if i had a uniden washington, new in the box, with no mods, i would leave it alone and talk quietly into the mic. these are great radios and very sought after, especially if they're virgins! im just saying, if you decide to mod the radio, have it done well, and that means mailing it out, and paying a bit of money. i will say that you will have one bad radio when all is said and done. good luck.

I once had a Uniden Washington, you can
try a DM-452 Hand Mic on it, Coppers sells
them./ This inexpensive Mic has impressed me
as it has lots of punch & works great on most
radios./ If you have anyone do modications,
make sure they know what there doing & have
the correct equipment to do it with./

70landcruiser,
to find a new in box washington is getting harder everyday. If it was me,I would do no more than having it checked for alignment, leave the mods for the old "beater"radios.the uniden washington is one fine radio right out of the box.Too bad the powers to be felt there was not enough demand for it and the Madison.

When i had my Washington it stayed stock.
They are nice radios. I sold mine years
ago & have always regreted it ever since.
The person i sold it to tried to tweak &
peak it & blew it up. Just don't understand
some people sometimes.

I have a new in box Madison and wont do a thing to it, I also have a new in box Washington and thought to get it peaked and tuned but hate to open it at all. I am getting a used Washington from a local that is modded and in real nice condition for 50.00 that I will use, I talked to him from my house to his and he was on the Washington, Wow was it loud and proud with stock mic.

If I was you I would get a Superstar DM 452 echo mic, they sound great.

I also own a Uniden Washington Base that I bought new back in 1993(I believe) any I love that radio. It has never failed to transmit or receive. I am using an Astatic D-104 Silver Eagle on mine and it works wonderefully.
