Well, I have a bunch of regular portable/table am/fm radio, some have shortwave bands on them. Back then when you simply bought a am/fm radio, many of them would come with sw1 and sw2. Not anymore. I want to see if I could take out the telescopic attn off the radio and run a single wire between the part of the radio that has that little screw and put the other end of the wire to the bottom of the attn hole and place the attn outside off my window for better reciving. Then I have to figure a way to stand this attn. If that works, then I want to see how I could do this with 3 radios using only one attn. I am not sure if I should use 1 or 2 wires! Please let me know how could I do this. 73

drcat, you sure can do that and it will increase your receive a bit, but its not necessary to go to that much trouble. simply clipping an alligator clip with a long wire attatched to it to the telescoping antenna will yeild the same results. this way you can switch between radios with ease. here is an easy to make shortwave antenna that will yeild excellent results.(you will be very impressed with the performance of this antenna.) steal a broom from the wife and take the handle off of it. you must use a wooden broom for this, or you could buy a 4 foot length of 1" dowel rod. get a 100ft. roll of 16ga. speaker wire, strip about an inch of insulation off of both wires on one end and twist them together. crimp an alligator clip onto this end. pull out between 4 and 8 feet of wire, depending on how far away from the radio you plan to put the antenna. use a cable tie or tape to secure the speaker wire to the bottom of the broom handle/dowel rod. so now you should have a length of wire, taped to the rod, sticking out between 4 to 8 ft. with an alligator clip on one end. now get a roll of double stick tape and tape all the way up one side of the rod. peel off the backing of the tape and begin wrapping the wire neatly and tightly all the way up the rod. this will take some time and patience. when you get to the top, put a cable tie or tape around the top of the rod to hold the wire in place. pull out about 6" to 8" of wire and cut it there. so now you should have a 4 to 8 ft. length of wire, then a broom handle wrapped with wire, then a 6 to 8 inch length of wire. strip off an inch of insulation from this end and twist the wires together. now get a 1 foot in diameter metal pizza pan. the solid one, not the one with holes in it. drill a hole in the middle of the pan, (it looks like a metal frisbee), just big enough for a drywall screw. (about 1/8") now drill a pilot hole in the top (6 to 8" wire side) of the rod. now put a screw through the pizza pan, and start it into the pilot hole. now wrap the bare end of the wire around the screw and tighten it all the way. the purpose of this disc is to cut down on noise and it works well. clip the alligator clip onto your radios antenna and lean the broom handle antenna against the wall in a corner. ( or put outside). i think you will be very surprised at the performance of this antenna. BTW, you can purchase every one of these items at wal mart for less than $20.00 good luck. matt |
