I was given this old amp at the passing of a friend. Anyway, does anyone out there know what kind of transistors this amp uses??. I still have to fire it up, to see if it works. Eqivalent pill knowledge would be useful also, if any one has any opinions. Thanks in advance.

open up cover, not sure, but possibly screws in front of face plate on amp, and lift cover off, or slide out of heat sink, and take a look inside.
if it's more than 7 or 8 years old, they're probably mrf 455 or 454's, if it's newer, could be sd1446's. 455's about 60 watts, 454's about 80 watts, and 1446's about 70 watts. replacement wise, they're not interchangable without circuit mods. amp probably would key from 50-80 watts and swing 100-150 watts, just a rough estimate.

Wolverine,
after reading your post,I got curious.dug out a tx-150 that was obtained in an auction lot and opened it up.this one,an all black tx-150 bi level by Palomar ,about 8" long has 2 SRF2072 transisters in it which after an online search found are singly rated at 80 watts at 30mhz on 12.6vdc.hope this helps.

Thanks Dindin. Now I know what to key into this amp (2 watts), that helps a lot. Patzerozero, I didn't have the nerve to open up this amp, because the head of the screws look stripped. I can't use a flathead or phillips screwdriver on the screws, so I thought I was "Screwed". Thanks for the assist anyway. I fired it up and it works. I'm keying 2 watts into the amp. Output from the palomar is 55 watts, swinging to 110. Not bad. I'm suprised that palomar made amps this small, seems to be a waste of wiring and installation time, especially when your desire for a bigger amp will be just around the corner.

FYI Those craftsman screw extractors work wonders if you take your time!

hey wolverine, the small el cheapo amps serve a purpose sometimes, even smaller than your palomar. i've had truckers feel they need more audio(power mic), but the SMALL radio, tristar 120 types or 'emergency' type radios don't always lend themselves well to a power mic, so a "mosquito" or single rm3 trans type amp serves the purpose for them.
your reported output tends to make me lean towards 2 mrf455 transistors....

Now I know why the make the little kl-40 mobile amps, or why some folks like to put those "Stinger Boards" in their radios. I've heard some truck drivers state that they own cobra 29's that will key 5-8 watts and swing up to 45 watts. Kinda makes it hard to justify the purpose of a little KL-40 amp.

Hi all , great forum.I have a small mobile amp, no name on it but it puts out about 50 watts, it also has a receive preamp. My question is even though this amp does not have a setting for ssb mode is it ok to run it on ssb?I was wondering about putting a capacitor in to give me some delay on the relay to work ssb, any thoughts or ideas.
Tnx Bob

key it up on ssb & see if it has enough delay built into it. if the relay clicks in and out with every syllable, forget it for ssb.
xforce claims they're not for ssb, but magna force line has built in delay and different biasing. used a 2-2879 xforce recently & it sounded fine on ssb @ about 30 miles, pausing for long breaths & the relay clicked, talk fast & it was fine.
