problem is the 2290 driver stage, 35 watts swing from the dx 44 is possibly 25 watts of swing too much. a 2 watt dead key and a 10-12 watt swing into a 1 driving 4 amp MAY possibly show 100-200 watts dead key and 400-600 watts swing- a VERY rough estimate, and that's on 14 volts. it's a base with built in power supply pushing 26 volts, or a mobile amp that you hooked to a 26 volt power source? shouldn't make any difference in why 2290 blew, but would increase output, but since i've never heard of it, was just curious.

THE GURRILLA: PUT A 1446 IN FOR A DRIVER,DEAD KEY 400 WATTS WORKED GOOD FOR A WHILE THEN POPPED, TRYED A 2879 FOR A DRIVER REALLY MADE IT DO IT THING.LESS SWING BUT OUTPUT IS UNREALLY,AT 100 WATT DEAD KEY,THE POWER SUPPLY ONLY PULLS DOWN TO 20 VDC.BUT I'VE HAMMERED THE *****OUT OF IT AND IT WORKS,CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE PILLS TAKE THIS VOLTAGE AT PROLONGED HAMMERING AND REALLY DON'T GET REAL HOT? the 1st (driver) transistor is the one popping because it isn't up to handling the 35 watts of swing. everything is alright with the 20+ volts, it's just the single 1446-2290-2879-whatever isn't happy being force fed 35 watts, the high voltage working with the high driven driver transistor is what's giving the high output. back down the swing from the radio and things should last longer too. keydown/competition amps use higher voltages momentarily, and they're prepared to fix things as needed. for general qsoing, excessive drive and high voltage just gives you a reason to take the station apart and fix it more often.

Sounds like a texas star 667 board set-up. You probally need to change the silver mica if you leave the 2879 since it is different from the 2290. Check the 667 schmatics. You might want to strap across the finals to even out voltage.
