Does anyone here have one of these radios? Can it be converted to talk on 11 meters? What kind of power are you getting out of it. What is the difference between the 257 and the 357 besides the amp?

I have 3 htx-10 which are the ham ver of a 257 the photo says it all it is my back up to my ft-840 on 10 meters and provides me with a way of lissing to bootlegers without tieng up my ft-100d.
LOVE that radio and the NEW mag-257 has several improvements. AS for coverage the 257 will go from about 25-30 mhz in 1 khz steps ..... as good as some low end ham sets.

Wow, that's a pretty set up you have. I just got a new 257 and I'm wishing I'd gotten one already. It has many functions for such a cheap prized radio. The s-unit meter cover 3 inches across the face of the radio. That meter is large! The receive is outstanding and the audio gets A-1 reports. The radio is a pleasure to look at in the dark. That blue color is hyptmtizing.

I also think my 257 is great, I personally don't like the blue lights in a mobile situation. They seem to stress the eyes as they are quite bright and nothing on the road a night is that blue so it seems unnatural, Maybe it's the way I have it mounted as it catches the lower corner of my eye. I MAY do a mod this weekend to reverse the buttons on the handset, If I do I'll take pics and post if it seems easy. After the warranty expires I may go for green LED's or be able to switch if there's room on the face PCB

Mobile reports are good, have not gotten it into the house yet on the Imax as I only have one power cord at this time and the other is VERY installed in my truck. That's good! if it is VERY installed the I plan on it staying, that doesn't happen too often in the truck :-)

Great radio for the money, mine swings to 72 watts into a dummy load on a bird. Has good recieve and great audio, is very good on SSB.
I give it **** out of 5.

The only improvements I would like to see is markings on knobs so you can see where there at at night, and a finer clarifier control. Also an adjustable contrast/dimmer for the light. The blue is a bit bright at night.

Stogie,

What kind of an amplifier are you using to get 72 watts out of a Magnum 257?

If you are not using an amplifier then you need to have your Bird watt meter repaired.

The Magnum 257 (Blue LEDs) is a Great Little Radio but not that Great.

Did the button reversal mod on the 257, took pics and notes. Will be more than happy to share if anyone is interested. Just did not feel right the stock way!

Will trade for knowledge on how to make my pics small enough to make it on here, what software to reduce bits, etc.

What is wrong with JOGUNN?

What kind of power can you expect out of this radio? Chad, what are you talking about? Please email me and fill me in on that, I'm thinking of getting one of these...can it be converted to 11 meters and modded easy?

Heres a toughie for the gerus! I need a SMALL SSB mobile with uppers to fit in the dash of my 01 GMC Sierra. Theres really no room under the dash and I really dont want to drill holes in the console ..sooo..I figure use the tape rack in the console (like Ive seen here in the pics)for a nice clean install. I have seen some rave reviews on the Magnum 257. Also been looking at the Midland 79-290 which also looks pretty kewl. I am a pretty good middle of the road e-tech and I wondering if any of you guys could make a recomendation on a radio for my situation and if I should tackle the mod myself or not. I dont really have anything but a wattmeter and a Fluke DMM here at home. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Dave123 Dayton Oh davemiest1@netscape.net

Hey Dave123:
From Personal Experience I will go for the Little Magnun 257 with Blue Display and Speech Proccesor Build-in.
I own the Previous model and works excellent.
The Midland seems a little drift from frequency and is a little noisy.
Check the Cooper Store they carry the Magnun-257 for a good prices, but to beat the Midland,The Magnun shines from theyre Warranty, something that any buyer will consider first.

Good Luck in your desicion.
