my buddy has a uniden pc68xl. Im pretty sure the limiters have been clipped, i say this cause he's really really loud and sometimes i even notice audible distortion. When im checking the swr or modulation on my meter it wont even let me calibrate my meter. I slide the knobs all the way and it wont let me get to the set position. I've tried this with multiple meters, is there something wrong |

if you mean turning calibrate knob to get it to line up w/the cal mark on the meter, then the dead key is too low to set cal. you probably see on radios meter key up and needle is way to left, then w/modulation it swings wildly all the way to right. i have a few 25/68 and 29/78's that i've modded, always turn rf gain or squelch into a variable output, i just don't use those controls. than i can set swr and turn dead key back down. even a small rm-type or 1-pill amp will give enough output to set cal. my yaesu and diamond wattmeters won't set cal with less than 20 watts deadkey. |

does anyone know how to change the dead key in that radio, it's not on the copper list of modifications. |

1st, check dead key on a wattmeter and make sure that it is too low, like under a watt(even under 3 watts may make some meters not calibrate). if that's the cause, then it probably has some type of swing mod that needs to be removed, put to variable or switched in & out of line, as i believe only power changes are made by turning coils and spreading coils at rear of radio(don't remember if 25/66/68 has VR for out watts or just amc) |
