Now that the skip cycle is on the downturn, what are your transistor preferences? Is it the high-gain (modulation) low watt SD1446 pill, or the low-gain, high watt SC2879's? Do you prefer 454 or 455 pill amps? Or maybe the SC2290's ?. Which pills do you shoot skip with ?. Talk local with? Do you use "Comp" amps?. A lot of questions I know. But I learn from positive feedback, and the reasons why Cber's use what they use. Thanks in advance. Wolverine. |

I prefer the 2SC2879 transistor due to it's ability to withstand lots of abuse while being able to output 80-100 watts per unit. My DX-1600 really does a good job with them :-) Of course the SD1446 is a nice transistor, too. Unfortunately, I can't get them to work on 160 meters like the 2SC2879s.... |

Hello, hellooo, is anybody home??. No favorite transistors anyone? Guts of an amp aside, maybe the general concensus here is, "As long as the amp works?". I guess I'll have to, be okay with that. Wolverine. |

Oh oh, time delay or lag time, thanks for your preferences, Kilowatt (I could've sworn that I posted this at 2AM). Anyway, I also like those same pills. The 2879's because you can volt them, and gain more power, and 1446's (I can them modulator pills) because they sound soooo loud, on the air. I never have seen the 454 and 455 pills used in anything other, than a 2 pill amp (Weird). I think the 2290's with a couple of exceptions (Amp maker's), are just being used for the driver section of amps these days. Any other preferences out there???. Wolverine. |

i've said it before and i'll say it again- 2879's followed by 2290's with 454's a distant 3rd. biggest box i use on a regular basis is ts-dx1600, 8 2879's. i drive it with 2 transistors, 2290's in my 100watt ar3500 or dx 250, 2879's in my dx350, or 454's in a boomer250. i've regularly put 100watts dead key and 200 watts swing into my 1600 with no ill effects. so maybe it's the 2879's that take the abuse, maybe it's because it's texas star. don't know. do know that i don't use anything other than those 3. when my competition is keying 500 and swinging 1500, i just turn up my dead key to 750 with 1200 swing and he's GONE! so forget the modulation and go for the watts! just be sure to use enough fans, modulation runs cooler, watts make HEAT! |

normally whatever the manufacturer puts in,their not always consistant with what they use.normally whatever they get a better deal on.have considered the sd1446 sort of an economy watt for dollar choice.the mrf/srf and 2sc series a little more heavier duty or more able to handle abuse |

The 1446 pills usually get bad press when it comes to performance, especially compared to to more powerful 2879 and 2290 pills. A lot of cber's would not run anything but SD1446's, only because a are basically well suited to low-drive, single- final radios. It's hard to get maximum performance out of a quad of 2879's, driven by a single final radio. 1446's are the opposite. Wolverine. |

Both of my amps. uses a pair of 1446s and with a low drive single output radio driving 4 watts AM and on sideband 20 watts of swing, the output of the base amp. is at 200 watts swing on sideband and 100 watts dead key on AM with a swing of 180 watts, gives me all the power I need to talk world wide. Several of you have heard my mobile and base set ups and have said it sounds very good. 73, Carl CEF-357 |
