hello, i just had my tech match by cobra 25 to a texas star modulator. Well my radio keys around 4 and swings to around 12 or 16, ya know a basic tweaked out radio. I am using this modulator to drive my x-force 400hd (4 2879's). Well the amp keys at 80 and swings to like 110. Now there is a green button labled am on that amp. It drops the amp to half power, but I think my tech matched it with that button pressed down. With it pressed down it will key at 10 and swing to about 90. Will it hurt the modulator to leave it how it is or should i have him drop the key down. thx |

the ts-mod probably is a 2290, so 80 swinging 110 is pretty much maxed out. you could stand to drop radio down to 2 watts dead key, swing will probably drop a couple, too, mod output might not change much, might even sound cleaner. texas stars are pretty rugged, if it doesn't get hot, use it. if it does, try a couple fans on it. (i had a 667v that could nearly burn you! used it 10 yrs til i traded it-it still works 6 or 7 yrs later! inside shows discoloration & well heated resistors but it's going strong!) x-force claims your 400hd will handle the 80 watt dead key, and can handle LOTS more swing, so you probably won't see anywhere near 800watt swing like they claim, probably closer to 500 watts. still not bad! |

yeah im just confused because the texas star says it can take 4 watts rms input, which is exactly what mty tech put it at I trust the guy. But I call x-force and they say that the max dk is 20 watts for the 400hd. But I don't understand because it would be the same as a 1 driving 4 amp. Because they call for a 4 watt rms input to. So I don't know, but thaks for the input |

comparing apples to oranges, here, sort of. texas star and x-force are among the current quality leaders in mass produced cb amps. follow each ones recommendations to their own amps, not the others. texas star builds high quality, fairly clean amps and their recommendations are to ensure long dependable life. x-force apparently is suggesting the max the transistors can handle as input looking to get the max out from each box. if they are truly built any more rugged than others to take abuse, i can't answer that, but they sell an UNREGULATED power supply recommended for use ONLY with their products, and their output ratings are for 12 to 20 volts. if they aren't built more rugged then neccessary, all of that abuse would result in a lot of blown up boxes, unhappy customers, and out of business. so your 25 is ok, the texas star should be switched where it keys 20 watts(though they say 40 on their site) and your swing will probably be around 80. start low, see how hot each box gets and work your way up a bit. drive your car at 110mph all the time, sooner or later something breaks. drive it at 60 mph and it'll last longer. same with amplifiers. just because they say you can get 800 watts doesn't mean you can or should try too often. |
