I thought that someone close to me was keying up and makeing my radio brake up, but when i seen the lights on the amp blinking i shut it down. the blinking stopped and so did the braking up. now i did`nt run it real hot(i could touch it and it was hot but i could keep my hand on it)so i dont think it burned up. when i tried it again on ssb it dont seem to have the delay all the time(ssb switch is on)and sometimes it seem too long a delay. the pree amp seems to work. Does this sound bad? does anyone know anything about the kl 500 amp? I Wish I would have bought it from copper!! |

Airplane1 To get a better understanding of your set-up, a few questions first... 1- What is the rating of your power supply? 2- Are you using the same power supply for both the radio AND the amplifier? 3- How hard are you driving your linear and with what kind of radio? Jeff Tech548 |

The amp is rated 40 constant and 42 surge. yes I am running the amp and radio off the same power supply but going to order a seperate 6amp supply for my radio soon, I was not going to do this but could`nt wait till my amp got here to talk cause skip was rolling. I am driving the am with 2watt and the ssb peaks at 12-13 watts according to my astetic 600. my radio is a uniden grant xl brand new. Just to let you know, I`t does this blinking mostly on ssb and even AM when not keying up. also the yellow preamp light goes on and flikers when i key the mic but the preamp is turned off. hope this helps? |

Airplane, Did this just start in the past day? You sounded fine when we were talking on Sunday. Does it happen on all output settings? If you starve a radio or amp for power (not enough power supply) they sound squirrely. Have you had any reports how your radio sounds? If you need a radio check, let me know. Paul |

Hey Paul, the problem just started, I have not talked to anyone since so I dont know if its getting out any more. The power supply amp meter is going up more then it did when I was talking sunday, eavn on low. the problem seams worse on higher settings. if you can get on tonight at 9:00PM on 36lsb I`ll try to get you for a check or any night this week at that time on 36lsb or email me if you prefer another ch. now yesterday evening it was very quiet but could`nt get anyone. |

Sound like you were overdriving the power supply. Try it on setting 3 at most and see what it does. Watch your meter for proper outgoing watts. On the KL's, seeing the preamp light flicker when talking is not unusual. By maxing the power supply, you might have had a bit of chattering going on when you shut it off. Try it again with the power setting turned down lower on the amp. Also, your signal will break up if the radio or amp is starved for power sometimes. I have no idea why lights would blink when not talking unless a relay chattered a bit. Try it again and see what happens? Alsworld |

Just wanted to say the amp seems to be working now. I dont understand what was going on but I am keeping the amp turned to the third setting at the most on SSB. It works good on all settings even highest setting on AM. I know it`s working because I talked to someone in gettysberg PA last night on 30 LSB with the power on third setting. That is about 50 miles from me. Thanks for all the help!

Airplane1 I can't help but wonder if you don't have a bad coax-jumper on your amp. When you have an intermitent problem like this, that's the first thing I would check. Bad jumpers can make your radio and amp do some weird things. I'm not saying that this is the problem but it sure is a possibity. Jeff Teck548 |

You know, Now that you say that Tech548 I did change the jumper from the amp to the meter when the problem stopped. I did look at it and it was loose at the one connector end. Maybe that was the problem all along. |

have had that problem also, airplane. my 100w ar3500 would work fine then start to chatter and/or squeal. it was my 20 amp belmoor power supply. 3 times i had to replace the IC. no clue why. 3rd time i soldered in a socket. of course haven't had to replace another in 10 yrs. also have had problem in my truck as 548 described. vibration causes coax to loosen. causes problem you describe also causes high swr and low output instead sometimes. 1st time no chatter, couldn't figure out why swr's went to 3:1, ripped apart whole antenna system on truck, just wouldn't go under 3. rewired all grounds(classic sign of 3:1 swr is bad ground), still no luck. decided to replace coax. went to unscrew it from back of wattmeter-was only on by a couple of threads, tightened it and presto! back in business. |
