I bought this amp maybe 2 years ago, hooked it up for the first time today, It only dead keyed 150w on high, and swung to 250w... And then all of a sudden it just went and quit, no power, nothing, Fuses are all fine? I thought they were suppose to dead key 450w? Could this amp. had a problem I didn't know about, and could it be fixed and dead key what its suppose to? And can it be changed into a High Drive amp? |

Gravedigger sounds like it has had to much power run into it out of the radio and has smoked the final transistors before you got it. Palomar, KLV, Texas Star make good amps. But if you've got some big bucks Ameritron and Henry are top end amps., need to remember there's an art to running linears. 73, Carl CEF-357 |

they put 4-sd1446's in 'em. they're only 70 watt transistors, i think you were probably at the honest limits of the amp. maybe ex-jo gunn salesman get hired by some amp advertising agencies? like yankee says maybe too much input, maybe just dumb-luck. have recently seen a couple x-force transistor base amps. solid state, seemed impressive, output-wise. a bit pricey, but i'd go for that before a boomer combo. klv tube amps...but if not careful w/tuneup-kaplooey! |

Could The Boomer 500 Be modified for High Drive, so this problem dosn't happen again, or as easily? If so, what do I need to do, to get it done right? |

Gravedigger162,It would be more fesiable to put varible power on the radio. To put in a new matched quad set of sd1446,RF Parts list them at $59.00 a set.Or about $13.00 each unmatched. |

Pardon my rant,"I'm getting so sick of this",sd1446 will top 70 @50 megs or 90 at 27 megs.At 27 mHz 4 sd1446s will take a MAX of 4x5 or 20 watts drive, avg. for an average of 360 watts on AM,but 4 with swing is much better.I've personally achieved 560 watts on ssb with 4 of these pills driven by a dx2517,these babies can crank and with little wasted heat and very clear reports and little if any splatter, someone probably tried to drive it with a 2990 or some such.Bigbob |
