I was wondering if anyone might have an idea why my new RCI 2870DX would just shut off on it's own? I turned the power supply off and then back on turned the radio off and back on and after a couple of tries it came back on... It seems ok but that really freaked me out. Any ideas or help would greatly be appreicated Bob |

My ICOM does that once in awhile when I exceed the tuner maximum wattage (I use a tuner for the horiz polarity side). It's too much feedback into the radio with no place to go. Might be somewhat similar? especially if you think you are getting RF back in the shack at the operator position? |

Ca346 thanks that makes sense. It's only happened once, but I was pushing the radio on high power I have a very low SWR, but the radio itself seems to put off allot of RF when operating on high power. I have to say it really freaked me out. It seems fine now, but... Anyway thanks I appreciate the response. |

Come on Bob. Of course its going to put out more RF with higher power. By the way. If that heatsink gets too hot to touch, it's time to let it cool down. Those high power finals in the amplifier section can be easily destroyed by over-heating them and are not cheap to replace. Don't drive your 2970 to maximum. There is a little less than 1/2 S-Unit difference between 100 and 200 watts. Just be careful. Jeff Tech548 |

Jeff I bought a fan and put behind the radio, and it seems to have really helped to keep it cool. But this one freaked me out. I had just turned up the high power to talk to Australia and it shut off. As far asthe RF goes I realize of course it will put off more RF on high than on low power. I was concerned about the amount of RF on high power in general might be an issue. Ca346 suggested that the amount of RF coming back into the radio might be what caused it to shut off so.. Anyway your advice is always appreciated, and I'll try to keep from maxing out the radio. I'll have to remind myself not to though. I know your right about the 1/2 S-unit difference, but it's sort of like having a Ferrari and running it at the speed limit. Thanks as always Bob |

Sorry to have posted this before I had checked everything out, I was in a panic. It turns out that it was simpley the cables from the power supply had somehow worked loose. In the future I will check things out more completely before I come running to the forum. |

Bc910 I really felt stupid when I found out what the problem was, but thought I should remind everyone that there are times when it's the simple stuff. Thans for giving it thought Bc Bob
