Hello everyone I'm relatively new here and I have found a wealth of information on this forum. I hope to be able to contribute back to everyone here. I was wondering if anyone know's if there are upgrades/mods to the linear that is built into the RCI-2990? I have been told that it is not the best design. Has anyone done any work the amplifier section in their radio? my intent is to be able to use the built in linear as a driver for a 6 pill. Any help/info will be greatly appreciated. 73's |

Steppenwolf that radio will drive a 6-pill just fine. Have at it. |

Some have replaced the thin coax with larger, and replaced/upgraded the power wires to the amp-board. Some have even noted that the heatsink compound sometimes is not propperly applied to the pills (I have noticed this first-hand). Otherwise, it works fine but a bit warm (add a fan to the heatsink)... |

as Inspector eluded to,there is a right and wrong way to mount pills to a heatsink, the first step is to "lapp" the mounting surface of the pill to be sure it has an ultra smooth and burr free contact surface,do this by laying a piece of 400 to 600 grit sandpaper on a flat surface and passing the transistor across the paper 2 or 3 passes.next with the board mounted to the heatsink make sure the transistors connections are on the same plane as the foil pads of the circuit board and the mounting screws are not going to stress the connections.it takes VERY LITTLE heatsink compound to effectivly transfer the heat, too much will act as an insulator. |
