I was wondering how many amps it would take to effectively run an RCI 2970 tuned by Copper. The stock 2970 says it takes 16 amps continuous with 20 amp surge. But Copper doubles the power from 50 watts dead key to 100, and 150 RMS on SSB. I was thinking a 22-amp power supply might do it at first, but have heard on the radio a 32 amp would be more like it. Anyone have any ideas?

Bob_p I wasn't aware that Copper will soup up a radio when it's under warrenty. Anyways, a RCI 2070 can easily do over 200 watts in the sideband mode if its been properly "worked over". Personally, I wouldn't even consider anything less than a 36-40 amp power supply. It needs a little breathing room so you won't be taxing it all the time. And speaking of power supplys, check out the Pyramid 40 amp on Coppers site. These big Pyramids are almost impossible to short out. They are one of very few supplys that have Overload and Short-Out protection circuits built into them. In other words, if you happen to short the positive and negative leads together, the power supply will shut itself down before any damage can be done to it. Pyramid gives you far more power supply for your money than anyone else does. I just love their protection circuitry. Jeff Tech548 |

Dont forget to look at the Astron power supplies, I have two which I bought after my pyramid went to that great power supply heaven, and they work flawlessly. My pyramid got a hum when you got within 10 amps of the ceiling, maybe I just got a lemon, but it is Astron for me from now on. Rich |

What about an auto battery? With a trickle charger, will that work? |

I called the seller and upgraded the power supply to the 40 amp constant 50 amp surge Pyramid PS52KX just to be abosolutely shure there wouldn't be any problems. It was only $20.00 more, and figured I couldn't go wrong. But I had bought a 22 amp constant and 25 amp surge that I was told would work by the salesman, but then was told the radio was being driven enough to make it sound right. Then all this on the same day I received the radio . The radio dropped ferom 150 watts to about 80 watts and had to return it to Copper who said they would take care of the problem, but suggested a bigger power supply but did not mention which one i should go with so... Thanks again Bob |

Bob_p In deed. You have one of the best. I still have the two stacked (paralelled) 52 Amp Pyramids that I use to run in my shop for mobile amplifier repair/testing before I retired from the CB business because of my now poor eyesight. Your Pyramid-52 will easily handle your 2970 without even breaking a sweat. Just don't feed the radio with more than 14 volts. Jeff. |

Thanks Jeff The power supply was $149.99 I just figured the extra $20.00 over the 35 amp would be worth the insurance. By the way what happens if you run the radio at or over 14 volts? Thanks again Bob |
