I have a new paradynamics 1000 watt paint can dummy load, but i dont know what to put in it or how much.

I was told to use transformer oil, but my supplier doesnt carry it. They said I could use veggie oil.

What should i use, or what can i use?

How much should I use to accieve the 1kw capabilities of this load on 11m?

Semo rebel,

I use Ford Type F Transmission oil in my MFJ-250 VERSALOAD. Very reasonable in price also.

The same thing as your 1000 watt can dummy load.

Hope this helps.

Yep and I have even heard of sand.

I always recommended transformer oil for those when I was their tech. Mineral oil as suggested works too. Motor oil, not sure on cooking oil but???

I haven't tried sand but I hear it works.

Just a thought

the problem with vegie oil if it will go rancid after a period of time.dont think you or anyone in the same house would appriciate it much a year or so down the road, you'll be looking for that dead possum you cant find.one other thing ,if it is built like the Heath Cantenna dont let it tip over,it will leak around the vent and coax attachment and next thing you know you have a half gallon of oil on the floor.dont ask how i know.

Yep they sure do make a mess when they get knocked over. Makes Pretty Red stains on the concrete floor too. hehehe

How long does this take? I filled mine with a gallon of vegetable oil in 1988, and 16 years later it is right under the bench. I have never noticed any kind of odor from it and I use it all the time.

OK 808 I like the idea of type f tranny fluid i need to get a case for when i change the tranny in my 72 ranger anyways.

You mentioned a cantanna sounds kinda like what my dad had i think it said cantenna tho. it was black with white letters and some sorta diagram on the side the lid had a box on it with what looked like an RCA jack on one side and an SO239 on the other. his was bout half full.he gave it to a buddy of mine for his cb shop along with a couple eico testers.

I still need to know how much oil do i need to get 1kw at 11 meters?

as far as it spillin no prob i was goin to put a hook on the underside of my work bench and hang it by its handle. My shop is in a 69 airsteam so i like to fasten stuff down for when i move it.

Semo rebel,

The nice thing about the MFJ Products is you can get online and find the Owners Manuals for about all of the products on the MFJ Website.

Sorry but I have no idea.

It was recommended to me several years ago by several Ham friends who have been in radios for about 90 years between them and use dummy loads a lot.

I have used it for several years now with great results.

Not sure why as they both own nothing but GM Products.

However I do know I can run high power into it longer and it does not heat up near as much as when I was using other types of oil.

Trans fluid will give off a terrible odor when it gets hot. Go to your electricity supplier and ask for transformer oil. Chances are they have some old transformers you can take it out of. The cost will probably be free. It will take about 3 quarts or 3/4 full. Don't trust the handle to hang it by. Make yourself a basket to fint the can and hang it that way. Still periodically check it for wear. Tony

Use mineral oil. Can get from local grocery store. Will handle the heat and react properly with rf energy

Lon. I think I'll make my own but I need a little info first.

How many quarts are in a gallon and how many gallons of Ford Type F tranny fluid will your Cantenna hold? And where do I mount the fan??

Also, what end of the can are you suppose to drill the breathing hole into.

How many quarts are in a gallon? 20 quarts in a gallon.

How many gallons can you get in a gallon can? You can get 20 gallons in the 1 gallon can.

Where do you mount the fan? You mount the fan in the window to get a brezze going.

Years ago when I bought my MFJ paint can dummy load it suggested either transformer oil or mineral oil. It specifically said to make sure the oil you used didn't contain PCBs - as Bruce remarked earlier - because when it's heated they are released in the fumes.

I'd be safe and either use transformer oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil is cheap and easy to find.
