First I will say it is a great radio
Now my problem this radio on sideband is off Freq.when cold..Let me back up and tell you what has happened, in the morning when I leave for work 5.00-am I try to talk to others out there and they come back to me and say that Im way way off on my transmitt Freq....OK then I tell them when I come home I talk skip with no problem they still repeat to me that my radio is messed up,..Buy the time I get to work the sideban works well now then how come when I get back in my truck when Im off work there is no problem??because my truck is WARM I trun it on and Im up and running.. I baught this from Copper and they tunned it up.
Can you give me any feedback on this cold radio?? right now it needs a 45 min. warmup or a sun heated car.

Wish I had the answer for you.
Corncob CEF #166, Renegade CEF #196, Beerman CEF #322, and Monk CEF #296 and I all own and use the VR9000's.
Last winter we did notice they were a little off freq Until the Car's and Trucks warmed up on the Freq Counter, maybe 5 minutes but other than that we have had not had any of the problem's that you all mention.
How ever we all talked and used them and no one ever told us we sounded off frequency, as it was just the display readout.
Other than the Frequency being a little off when it was 0% and below out they have ALL been Problem Free.

Thank you Lon if my Voyage VR-9000 was that cold 0% it would take a hair drier to warm it up...AM is fine sideband is the problem But I will say that when it is warmed up everyone says it the best moble that they have heard.there's got to be a reason for this cold radio on sideband(..Again thankyou

There is a cold solder joint somewhere in the SSB circuit. When the radio warms up, the "open" expands and you then have a complete "closed" circuit.
Just a bad solder joint. But since I'm a serious sidebander, that problem wouldn't be in my radio for very long. I'd have my iron out and touching up all suspected joints in that area.
With the radio COLD and the printed side of the board up, just press on the board here and there until you can possibly pinpoint the area that may be the problem.
I don't usually recommend this but, if you're really good with an iron, and with the radio on, just touch up any suspected joints you think may be causing this malfunction.
And more than likely, that's exactly what your radio tech is going to do anyways.

lets just say that by nature (circuitry), these radios are very thermally sensitive. there is no way to correct this problem than to add a heater/oven to the pll offset oscillator. i have never done this, but i am sure it can be done. i am also not sure how expensive this may be as i have never looked into this. |

hi, has you tried to leve your radio on all the time? i leave mine on constancley and it works fine.also i was a wondering about my vr i to have bought it from copper(wonderful company bought a pc76xl 12 yrs. a go and its still going strong,only been in it 1 time)and it it will dead key at aprox.3.75 low and will dead key 14 on high,verable key. is there anything that i could get just 1 more watt,all i want is 1 more watt.what about a super mod. kit? any thing more i could get?
also could someone tell me where i could get a good tech to work on it around richmond,ky? i dont trust just anyone to my work.

It would be well worth it to have him do your work and I am 100% sure you would be very satisfied with his work and the performance of your radio when you got it back.

on a related subject, my superstar 3900 bought new in march (modified of course)has always been dead on ssb tx until "warmed up". then its fine. usually to hurry it along ,i will key it a couple of times on am first then change to ssb and it ok. so now in reverse order, i ordered a vr 9000 last nite, so now im reading up on them. if i encounter the ssb problem with it, i'll be disappointed but used to it...aj |

hey when the vr 9000 is cold the volume is loud.but hey i bought it from the bargains page and was informed of this problem. other than that ive had no problems, (that i can remember anyway) |

update the vr 9000 is not a winter mobile. temps below 70 in the truck make the volume loud and just the radio being on and keyed wont warm it up enuff to make it work rite. guess its coming in the house for the winter. |

ok what i have noticed.. not with the 9000 but any other radio, yes even my 696f.. when its cold it will shift until you do some talking.. metioned before by leaving it keyed up, to do this the right way switch to AM an leave it keyed for 5 min or so an that will warm it up nice, make sure you have your rf turned all the way up, another thing make sure no-one is usiing the channel... it takes my 696 about 5 min to warm up but i just keep adjusting the claifier to whoever i am talking to until it is stable. probably the best thing to do is unlock the clairfier on the 9000 so it tracks on rx an tx on the same pot.. either fine or course... i htink that is the worst thing any radio company could have come up with.. one knob alot eaiser while trucking down the road.. anyway there is my 2.5 cents worth.. |

Bulldog, this is good advise for a quick fix. The "MAJOR " problem is a "5" didgit freq. counter. Since AM is so wide banded... it makes for a good road map. For "Serious" side band users!!!!!!!!!! It's a piece-O-junk! You need at "least" 6 didgets to fine tune with an unlocked clarifier. 7... even beter! Unless you use your VR 9000 in the house, always on, house temp always the same,....... stick an extenstion cord through your window at night with a heater on, all night long, and you may have to wait 5 miuites. I adressed this problem to Galaxy 7 years ago. They came out with the 93T. Gee wiz??? , Why cant we find any more 148 F's, TR 696F mobiles????? 6 didgets are still out there..... You just have to pay more!! |

I had the same problem with a Galaxy 88 several years ago. My solution was to put it on a 10 amp power supply and connect it to the dummy load and leave it on all night. Grab it in the AM on the way to work and it was always good to go then.
