LONG PRODUCED AND HIGHLY DEPENDABLE FT-840 ....With CW filter FM board and AM filter. It's the VW beetle of the ham world... Not a fancy radio no dsp bare bones controls CLEAN TUNEING GOOD AUDIO. I had a 747 built in 90 and replaced it with the 840 ( the 840 is a upgraded 747 it was the 747 replacement ) and its run 4 years clocking long hours.. Another group of good ( older ) radios IC-230, DR-m03, DR-m06, FT-620 and DX-70t alinco. AVOID FT-100 and 100D ( DOG )............not a good choice. |

Lets see - Yaesu FTdx-401 - 14 tubes, dual VFO, 460pep (give or take a couple)160-11m Nice old "desktop" radio. More modern - I'd got for a IC-706. Had one until I needed to pay immigration. Nice little radio. What I would not have is anything by ADI. Jo Ann had an ADI 2m radio when I met her. In my first year here ADI had it back 4 times and the thing still has problems. |

HT Yaesu FT-60R wideband receive from 108-520 and 700-999.990 MHz easily modified for MARS or GMRS/FRS (though not FCC legal LOL). The best audio I have heard from an HT both transmit and receive. The battery holds its charge for quite some time. HF JRC JST-135 General coverage transceiver. This unit has robust audio with 150 watt SSB output and covers all the HF bands. 200 memory channels and a VFO that is as smooth as silk. |

The ft1000D and the new ft2000.The ft2000 has just about everyting you need.It has a very simple transmit mod and DSP.It also covers 6 meters. The list would be too long to list. The only part of it that wont work on cb would be the VRF seperate relays that are set to certain bands but its no big deal. |

Although not designed for ham use, intended for military and govt. use, my favorite HF receiver is the Collins designed R-390A. Favorite HF ham transmitter is the Johnson Viking Valiant. Favorite HF transceiver is Kenwood TS-440S. Mostly because it has a super quiet, triple conversion, full coverage receiver! And for you long-winded types, the transmitter is capable of continuous duty (i.e.- broadcasting). Favorite HT is Standard C528A. It has a bullet-proof super hot receiver. Capable of continuous transmit too. |

randy-the rci5054dx100 was my 1st 6 meter radio-and i LOVED it! the ic551d that followed it(in a trade for a poorly operating ft101e) was night & day difference in the receiver! my ic706mkIIg receives even BETTER then the 551d! all these comparisons were made on a single ku4ab loop at 35'! at my 1st opportunity, i have a 2nd loop to stack, as well as a NIB mfj 3 element 6m beam(i know i know, junk, but the price was right !) the 5054dx100 is going into the baby pickup truck(before spring i hope), with a 6m hamstick & a trailer hitch mounted ku4ab loop. (still searching for a saturn 6 halo to put on the truck instead....) |

Kenwood TS-520. Rugged, dependable, great audio with the MC-50 mic. Never were popular with 11m ops because they intentionally made the 10m xtals very hard to get to-- but much more rugged than sweep tube radios. I also have a soft spot for HW-101s, though I haven't owned one in years. Part of the fun was all the mods you could do on them (and they needed some of them!). |

Kenwood TS 820S, until i buggered it and turned it into a receiver. Yaesu FT 7, pulled it out of storage and still sounds awesome....for 10w. Yaesu FT 203R, found it laying on the driveway of a petrol station years ago and still use it to bag on the Westlakes repeater. Magnum 357DX, Classed as a 10m radio, has more grunt than a pig farm, or a fleet of F250's..lol. I love them all, now to get the finances to repair the 820....i can dream too...lol. Without boring anyone with too much detail, I am pretty much an Icom fan and have some new and some older Icom gear. IC-746 (primary HF and 6M SSB rig) IC-706MkIIG (used primarily for 432 SSB and 6M FM) IC- 271H (2m SSB and FM simplex) IC-229H (2M repeater rig) Also hooked up and running: Ten-Tec Omni-D (secondary HF rig) HTX-10 (10 M all mode) ADI-247 (220 FM) Midland LMR for 440 FM and of course my Galaxy DX-949! I am also a fan of some of the older American made gear. These I usually just keep shelved and get out ocassionally and run them to blow the dust out. Clegg Mark 3 (2M FM xtal rig) Clegg FM-76 (220 FM xtal rig) Clegg 66er (6M AM) Gonset CommunicatorII ( modified for AM and FM on 2M) Heathkit (Benton Harbor lunchboxes for 6M and 2M) Yaesu TF-790RII (70cm all mode) Icom IC-251A (2M all mode) Kenwood TR-9000 (2M all mode) Plus a virtual plethora of other radios, HT's, amps, meters, scanners, SWL radios, tuners, test equipment, etc. I'll get a pic of the shack up sometime in the near future. I bought the TS-2000 becaust it was the only radio made that fitted my needs. DSP / DUAL RECEIVERS mini repeater mode solid service record. After 30+ years as a YAESU owner ..... Yaesu except for the 857 has nothing under $2k that will go head to head AND THEN THEY DROP THE FT-840! after retreating with their tails between their legs and ditching the FT-100 owners ... hanging them out to dry ...... droping the radio and having no final transistors for it. Also Haveing owned a FT-100d ......... and being told WE DON'T FIX THEM but you can buy our NEW FT-XXX on a 2 year old $1,000+ radio that went back 3 times for problems in it's first year. NOW the FT-2000 some problems with them too ... Yaesu needs to THINK before they put out more high end radios |

Hollowpoint: I just cut and pasted this from a Kenwood dealer site for the TS-480SAT. TX/RX AF DSP 16-bit AF digital signal processing offers such powerful features as noise reduction, TX/RX equalizer, and AF filters. What kind of DSP are you talking about in your next rig? 73, Marty |

In the shack, TS-520S, or any of the Kenwood hybrids for that matter. Portable use the FT- 817ND, yes I like QRP portable ops. Yesterday I talked about 800 miles on 2.5 watts and was solid 5 by 7 into a 40 meter loop at 8 feet. Now that's my kind of hamming. cheers, sb016 |

1956 Johnson Viking valiant. 400 watts pep from a 150 watt carrier. Wide audio mods with a EV 638 mic. No tinny sound for me. Rock solid VFO. Dont touch it for days and days at a time. Big CLUNK when the HF lights off after key up. 1958 Johnson Viking Ranger. 120 watts pep from a 30 watt carrier. Solid state PS and 8417s in the Modulator section. Runs hotter then a pistol though! World radio labs 1956 Globe Champion 300a. THis is the loudest radio on the planet. 120 lbs of US Steel! Two 9909's in the final, two 807s modulating them. SCREAMING loud audio. Solid state PS means this radio keys 75 to 100 wats and pins the 500H bird slug in the corner deep. Only complaint is that the VFO turns on and of with the PTT. Key up and your 5KC down. WIth in 4 seconds your on Channel. THis makes for a unique sound on the air.. CLAAACK. then you fade in with a Swooosh sound. Talk talk to soon or you the first word will be off Freq. World radio labs Globe king 500C. 540 watts of AM love. Mine weights almost 300lbs. Uses a 4-400 final tube. Key up 300 to 500 watts. Peak out at 1300. Needs a dedicated 30AMP 120 volt line. Dont try to run this one on house current! This is the king of all radios in my opinion. Nothing comes close to that Plate modulated audio. Recievers: My Favorite is the hallicrafters SX100 with R46 speaker. I run it with my Johnsons. ROck solid and the sound has to be heard for you to understand. hallicrafters SX110. This one runs with the globe transmitters. Super sound. A bit touchy on the tuning. Rock solid once warmed up. 10 meter mobile gets the nod to my President George. In my opinion it simply the best SSB mobile ever made. Tripple finals means 50 watts out. AM is loud and the Reciever is killer. SSB station is a Yaesu FT101, speaker, o scope, Freq counter with Sure 444 mic. AZ |

my 1974 vintage ft101e is back in service and while not neccessarily my favorite HAM radio, it IS my favorite CB radio . after playing with an ic746pro, it has been added to my shopping list-possibly at the expense of some other little or non-used radio toys . |

Starface, I am using a PDL-2 on 10 and 11 meters, I dont have my general yet so I dont get on the other HF bands yet but that will change befor Christmas(hopefully). Then I think I will go with a grv or who knows at this point.I think I will be going with a Diamond A502HB for 6meter as I have no antenna so far for 6meter. The 7000 is alsome, you would love the receive on it, it is the best. |

I love mine, Very dependable, been problem free for for about 20 years now and reasonable to rebuild and easy to see/read control box. And I LOVE the fact that I can remove 4 bolts and slide the base out of the way without disconnecting any wires to slide the mast up and down when doing antenna work. Kenwood TS 850S with antenna tuner...great audio with the ability to change transmit filter bandwidth! Maybe one of the best HF rig Kenwood put out. The TEN TEC Omni 6 with upgrades is also a fantastic HF rig...but is edged out by Kenwood audio! The HR 2510 in the mobile is great |

A friend of mine has bought sold and traded just about all of the radios mentioned, except the $10,000 radios. He has compared Kenwoods of various models, Yaesus, and Icoms and lesser knowns. I mean he has put some money in this stuff. He has demontrated his finding to me. I, of course, could tell him the best quality sound listening to him. The Yaesu and Icoms really have punch. But while you have to spend a lot of money to get the really quiet radios in Kenwood and others, Icom proved in his and opinion and mine to be the quietest in the under $2500 range. If I were buying new, I would likely get an Icom Ic-756III pro or the moble version of this radio which someone is selling an add on large external display face. I would order them like this, and this does not consider all brands but the ones discussed: Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood in the under $2500 range. These are the stock radios without added filters, etc. Mikefromms |
