How much power are you running. If that radio was set up correctly, it should not run hot. High power should not be set higher than 8-10 watts maximum!!

Also, incorrect settings of the bias controls for the driver and finals can make a radio overheat. Some people unwittingly turn them up as though they are power controls.

Power. Hum. 600watts in my mobil, about 375watts base. I have put the radio in bith house and truck and it still gets distored. Been that way scence I bought it about a year ago. Everbody said it sounder great eventhough on my end it sounded like . The radio is deadkeying 2.5watts and swings to around 35 to 45 watts.
Thank you for the info

I'm sorry. I misunderstood your post. I thought you meant that the radio itself was getting hot.

I have never run into a problem such as yours with the talkback. Hopefully someone on the forum can help you repair the problem.

However, there is a way to have your Echo/Talkback turned "ON" so that others can hear it and at the same time have it turned "OFF" so you don't hear it.

If you have the DX-99V with the original type echo board, cut the wire where it goes to TR-35 and install a SPST switch. You'll of course have to add wire.

For the later model DX-99V with the SMT type of Echo/Talkback board, install a SPST switch in the wire located in J-15 next to R-244.

The switch will allow you to still have your Echo/Talkback turned "ON" so that others may hear it but you won't be hearing it.

I hope this may have been of some help to you.

Jeff what part of my post did you not understand and I'll try to explain it better. I like the idea of putting a switch in to turn off the talkback but then if it got out of tune I wouldn't know it till somebody said something. I'm thinking about getting the talk back turned down a little bit and see if that helps any with the problem. Thank you for the info.

If your're worried about your Talkback getting out of tune, you can check it occasionally at the flip of a switch.

As far as the distortion goes, the Talkback can become distorted if these radios have been "peaked," and there is no real cure for this because the Talkback just amplifies what goes to the RF section.

Try adding a 470k ohm resistor from junction of C-154/R-207 to the junction of C-187/R-235 on the solder side of the board. This will also give you clean Talkback on SSB and FM.

Try different values of resistance to get the amount of volume you want. The less the resistance the louder the Talkback will be.

Hopefully someone else has some suggestions for you.

Thanks Jeff,
I had a resistor added already and it helped out some. Still distors a little. No Tech can figur out why yet. But it works fine excepe on my end.
Guess I'll just live with it.
Thank you for the help.
