I currently own a Wilson 5000 mag-mount, and an Anttron A-1700 mobile ant. Have there been any tests or comparisions between the hearing ability of these antennas compared to the much "heralded" 10k loaded mobile antenna?? For some reason, I've been recently talking farther than I can hear using only 430 watts. Also, would a 5" magnet hold a 10k antenna (with the shortest shaft) at driving speeds of 55- 60 mph ??. "Constantly experimenting and constantly broke". Thanks in advance. Wolverine. |

I would love to see comparisons between the "mag mount" and the "roof mount". ANY antennas. I have a Wilson 1000 roof mounted (drilled that hole) in my pick-up and have talked with Australia. I also have a Wilson 'Lil Willie' mag mount on my SUV and it's only good for short distances. But it works for me because the SUV is so high, I can't put anything else on it without banging the garage door. CA346/CEF197 |

A through hole roof mount antenna will almost always have a lower radiation angle than a mag mount. The magnetic counterpoise coupling is lossy. |

Then I guess it would be inadvisible to even try to mount a 10k antenna on top of a 5" magnet, even with the shortest shaft. I assume that the weight of the coil portion of the 10k, would cause the whole antenna to shear away from the roof of my taurus, 5" magnet and all, at probably 45mph. Then again, maybe 5" magnets are only suitable for whip type antennas with a maximum 5 or 6 foot maximum height. Who knows? |

One 5" magnet ain't suitable for nothin',now 8-5 inchers with a homemade aluminum bracket and stainless fasteners, now that will work,it'll hold, but to achieve decent coupling you'll need 4 mags for every 250 watts pep,now it gets ugly and expensive, just poke that hole and be done with it,and if you want to experiment put a ball mount on it is cheap, alot cheaper than mucho magnets.Bigbob |

Wolverine, I just went through a terrible experience with magnetic mount antennas. Your amp will not work properly with a single magnetic mount. I have a Wilson 1000 trunk mount now and it works fine. I was using a A-1700 with a 5" magnet and the magnet would not take my little helper hardly at all. All kinds of problems like the dashboard warning lights popping on and the electronic transmission shifter shutting down. This experience left a bitter taste in my mouth for magnetic mounts unless you run barefooted. I like the A-1700 antenna a lot. I just didn't want to drill a hole and the firestick trunk mount I ordered for it left too big of a gap so it would have rained in my trunk. Maybe I threw the baby out with the bath water ordering a brand new Wilson 1000 but I'm happy with my results. Still, I believe a properly grounded A-1700 would make a fanstatic antenna. It worked well with a magnet barefoot. Good luck. mikefromms |

I used my wilson 5000 with its puny magnet to run 1500 watts through, it stays on my roof at all speeds, and handles the linear fine with swr with linear on at 1.5, with it off at 1.1. Make sure you run a short ground wire on the linear, I have mine to the seat belt bolt which goes right to the frame on my vehicle. When I first put the big box in I had a long ground wire on it, and the swr was not acceptable. |

BE CAREFUL PIG,a guy in here 2 years ago did that and he had one of those click the belt or you don't start features and rf crawled up the wire and gave him a bad belly burn, turns out the wire was a good rf ground also. |

Same here Pig040. I have no Problem running a magna force 350 amp, or any of my other amps through my Wilson 5000 mag, mounted on the roof center of my vehicle. Swr is 1.2 . I tried using my anttron antenna on a 5" mag-mount. Funny thing though, my swr was still only 1.3, and it was also mounted smack dab in the center of the roof. I remember Bigbob stating in another post, that as long as the antenna is above all glass (Roofline), then your electronics of your dash, or computer won't go screwy. I have a spring for my 5" mag to help the 2 ft fiberglass portion of the anttron to flex a little at highway speeds. My wilson held to the windloading effects even at 85 mph. When I tried the same thing with the anttron, the 5" mag slid 1" at 45 mph. I then took it up to 55-60 mph, and I lost the mag and antenna, which was dragging along side the car. The front right passenger seat and the coax was the only thing keeping the amp from being ejected from the car through my right side window. "Go Figure" Wolverine. |

HAHA Wolverine, sounds funny after the fact, bet it was PITA a when it happened though! Bigbob, No wire in my belts, dodge pickup, lucky it has a motor! The only trouble i ever had with it, a friend of mine pulled up in his van running over 3000 watts, and it gave me an extra digit on my digital clock! But I got him back, found his van parked, and put baby powder in the defrost vent! And the blower on high! |

I used a full length whip 102 stainless,Copper mega-magnet mount(4-5" mags)no spring,mounted in center of pick-up cab,no movement of mags even at 100 mph,whip was bent over at 45 degrees,put on 5' wilson silver load 'cause antenna was over 15 feet tall,now I have a little better clearance.Bigbob |
