Hi,
I have a Radio Shack magnet mount antenna. It's fiberglass and about 32" long. The package doesn't say what it will handle watt wise. My guess is not very much :-( I have looked at a few of the other radio shack antenna packages similar to mine and the only one with wattage listed is about 50 watts max.
So, my question is:
I'm getting a KL-300P Amplifier from Copper any day now :-) Will my rad shack antenna melt or something similar?
If I could track down a 102" radio shack whip, would that be able to deal with the KL-300P?
(I work at radio shack so it's easy to fiddle with their stuff and i get a small discount)
OR....
Would I be better off getting a Wilson 1000 mag mount?
It has to be a mag mount for now becasue I can't put holes in the roof of a car I don't own yet :-)
Thanks for any input. I really appreciate all the info on this forum!
Mark

Those Radio Shack antennas are not rated for much power, 100 watts max..
The 102" whip will handle anything you put through it. My next choice would be the Wilson 1k mag mount mounted in the center of the roof. Both the Wilson and the 102" whip will handle the kl300p with no problem.
Make sure everything is well grounded and both wires(+/-) from the radio and amp are run to the battery.

Mark I would go with the wilson 1000 I have it on my car (trunk) and a mag mount on my truck.
Had the K-40 for a long time but where the whip that goes into the base broke all the time.
Went to the wilson antennas from that point on.
Hope this helps out.

I have used the Wilson 1000's Mag Mount's, for years and never had any problem with them or the 102 Inch Stainless Steel Whip is also a good choice,

I had a 102 inch whip mounted on 79 ford pinto wagon mounted on a ball mount.
looked kinda goofy but that thing would TALK.
A friend had steel whip on his pontiac lemans with an amp started talking the tip 6 inchs down was glowing beet red.
But I still like the wilson easy to set swr's and they talk.
I agree with Lon 100% both great antennas.

I've got a radio shack k-40 magnit mount and it's problay the best magnit mount anteinna i've owned. R.s. people said it hold around 250 watts but I've put it thru a lot more (650watts). Still works great. Unckle uses it now and he loves it.

I had one of those double big can coil antennas screwed into a generic mag mount, was talking on my mobile (at the time 1500 watts), all of a sudden the swr went up, got out looked at the antenna, and it was slowly settling in the south, melted the generic mag mount, burnt a round hole in the paint!
