Hello all, Trying to decide which amp to get, I am mainly using icoms that put out 100 watts, so I am wondering if the high drive model will deliver a bit more oompth compared to the low drive model. Also, there are 1 less tube in the high drive etc, but , does anyone know how they compare and does one give a better consistant output than the other? I read the review from tech 808 about the low drive BUT I really need some insight, or experience, from someone who has the high drive model. They are not cheap so I want to spend my $$ wisely, I hope someone can help. Cheers Andrew 739 |

For your application, the 1000p would seem to be the better choice. Sure, you could run the 1000 with reduced power from your Icom rig, but its just a matter of time before you forget to reduce power and, well, you will be unhappy if you blow your amp up. The 1000p will still work fine with a lower drive radio, you just won't get the maximum power out of it. That's my 2 cents! David n9rzf |

Sixtiesmania Heed to the Highlanders' words of wit. He speaketh the truth. And just maybe from experience. The 1000P is the way to go for your application as long as you don't constantly drive it hard and run it to the max constantly. Remember this. If you were to run it at 6 or 700 watts, you would have to more than double your power just to get a 1 S-Unit increase on someones S-meter. Not to mention the much longer tube life you would get from cutting back on the power that you're driving into it. Jeff, kc0gxz. |
