I have recently acquired a D&A 15 Meter Amplifier. It already has a 11meter conversion done to it. On the front of the amp it has a total of (4) four tuning knobs on it they are labeled as follows. There are two (2) power levels on this amp Low and High. Top two are: Ant: Load.....Final Tune. The two on the bottom read: Driver Load...and Driver Tune. What is the proper tuning procedures for this Amp? The tubes used in it are 6LQ6s, there are (9)nine of these in all. It appears that there are (3)three driving (6)six in the final area. As I tune it now I am getting approx250-350watts on low, and 500-700 watts on high out of it How many watts should I be getting out of it? I am a SSB operator and only use this on SSB There is also one other tube without a cap on the top of it, not sure of the # on it yet.
Here Are some of the questions I have and I am hoping maybe someone can help me out on these.
(1)How do I know how many watts I can safely drive this Amp with and on which settings?
(2)If the Amp is in the High position, I assume that the first (3) driver tubes are not driving the last (6) tubes in the Amp?
(3)Are there or is there a manual/copy of this amps instruction?
(4) Can I drive this Amp with my Yaesu FT-101-Z? Peaks about 100w SSB on its own. It is not the ZD model and has no AM capabilities.
(5) On the front of the Amp, there is a spot marked Xtal, where a Xtal could be plugged in at? What is this for ?

ohio biker,
1, drive with a normal radio.2-8 watts will work fine. youll smoke that amp with the 100 watts your yeasue puts out.
2,all pull on high.
3,ive not heard of a d&A like yours unless its been modified. sounds like a phantom 500 but its has 4-6lq6's driving 6-6lq6's in the high stage for ten total not counting the keying tube if it has one.look at cb tricks ,com for info on d&A amps.
4, i wouldnt
5,yah know i cant remember now but its nothing youll use in cb use. |

The amp says on the front of it: 15 Meter CW Transmitter...PDX-400. On the inside there are a total of 9 6LQ6's and one other tube that I can't read without pulling it out, at this time I don't want to pull the tube out. The amp does resemble the old Phantoms I have seen except this is a beige color not the trade mark silver cast grey they normaly use. Still wondering on the proper tune up as relates to the driver tune and the driver load?...Thanks for more help?...ANY IDEAS BRUCE? |

Hey,Ohiobiker,I run a D/A Phantom triple stage 10 6lq6/6je6c tubes it is there late model Brown with Tan face the older models were gray or silver in color.They were made in scottsbluff,Nebraska.Early 70's if I remember? As far as I have heard to tune the amp then the drive then the amp again,for max output.Then i back my load down about 10watts this gives memore swing.But not shure if you should run it full up against the meter or back it down for more swing.I have better luck with the tubes lasting backing it down a little.Just my 2 cents worth.Im a young pup so I have a lot to learn.But I try to help. Ohiobiker,I drive my Phantom 500 with 2-4 watts dead key on my pdc 600 meters,dead key 250 swing 7-800 if conditions are right,dont need any more power,also if you over drive the tubes they wont last as long,and your signal will distort.I like my little Jo Gunn2, try 2 get it at least 36 feet off the ground or 1 wavelength,put mine up on an old wind mill tower,this antenna has been up 4 years and no problems at all.I bought my jo gunn2 new in the box with rotor controler and coax for $200 so I got a good deal for the money.If you look arroud you never know what you will find.Take care,Yote. |

This would most likely be a d&a-PDX400.Put no more than 2 to 8 watts deadkey tops.The driver tubes are always being used which is why they require a low dead key.The xtal socket was for an oscillator crystal.Part of D&As attempt to cover up the fact that the amp[ was made for cb.You may notice one tube or its socket set off to the right of the driver tubes.This was the oscillator tube.This tube is the same number tube as your drivers but it really should be in there for one reason.It doe not give extra power but it does balance out the filiment voltage of the driver tubes.Expect a deadkey of around 375 to 400 am watts.I try not to give swing because its according to what kind of meter and what brand as to what you will see.Even rhe deadkey depends on do you have a perfect load and how accurate the meter is so I gave you a ballpark figure of what it will do. |

I'M IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING A RAIDER AMP THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS ONE CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW MANY WATTS IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO? I HOPE THE PIC COMES THROUGH THANK YOU |

They run 4-6JR6 tubes or one of the subs for that tube. D&A sold them for a 100 watt amp. The ones I've seen ran best at about 40-50 watt keyup and would swing 100-150 watts. They were build for CB use and low key low drive radios, the band switch means nothing. That is one of the later models, the earlier ones were grey. Good little amps for what they were though. They do get pretty warm as they have no cooling fan.
