How do you get solder to take when there is too much flux on a chip and trace?

Take small knife and scrape off excess. I use a hobby knife. I then will clean with q-tip and alcohol. Use good quality solder made for electronics. I like the highest silver/tin % i can get.

when you say chip, are you talking about an smt device?
