I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I really have no idea. The question is how do you read the incoming signal? It has 8 bars max. I thought I heard someone say before, 2 s-units for every bar. Is this correct? I have a service manual, and it don't even say in there. Thanx in advance for any help. 226 / Mark |

It really doesn't matter,no two radios will show the same,on the same signal, you can get inside the radio and change the sensitivity with a VR,so where does that leave you, same boat as me,without any oars. |

Thats the way we do it here 2 s units per bar. Or thats what ive been told by the guys that run them... 6 or 7 bars is a good signal in my book!!! |

Like Bob says all radios are different. Find someone with a radio with an analog meter, and see what theirs is reading compared to yours, and then you will know. Just make sure your recieve power is set the same as theirs. |

Ok rich, I understand all radios will have a variance, I just wanted to have an idea when someone asks what kind of a signal they are putting on me. Instead of saying I have 4 bars out of 8, I should be able to tell them I have a reading of 8 S-Units. That's really all I was asking. Thanx for your input though. 73's, 226 / Mark |

226akamark, Do what I do, FORGET THE METERS! USE YOUR EARS! Readability & Strength Table below: R-1 = Unreadable S-1 = Faint Signal Barely Perceptible R-2 = Barley Readable S-2 Very Weak Signals R-3 = Readable with Difficulty S-3 = Weal Signals R-4 = Readable with no Difficulty S-4 = Fair Signals R-5 = Perfectable Readable S-5 = Fairly Good Signal R-6 = N/A S-6 = Good Signal R-7 = N/A S-7 = Moderately Strong Signal R-8 = N/A S-8 = Strong Signal R-9 = N/A S-9 = Extremely Strong Signal S-9 + = WALKING THE DOG AND TREE TOP TALL As no two meters are the same and I never pay attention to any of the meter's on radio's anyway I use the above system. Completely FAIL PROOF! If wife or better half is in other room and say's that GUY IS SLAMMING or BOOMING like Viking does on the Sunday Net's, this also is an S-9 Plus. And you can always Add a + to any of the above. Lon Tech808 |

Lon, That's good information. I'll keep that in mind when I'm running my 142GTL. I can't get the meter adjusted even close what it says on the 2970 or HTX100. It says 5 to 6 S-Units, when the other radios are saying 20 over. I've tried to adjust it, but that's as far as it goes. On the other hand, Some stations peg the needle. Don't understand, but anyways I think I'll just use that little table.... Thanx, and hope to hear you out there again. 73's, 226 / Mark |
