Thought I post this here as it has to do with my boomer. Ok about a month or so ago I went out to get on my ham radio to check into a 2m net, I use the power supply to power up the 2m mobile for base use. Well I turn the it on and it started smoking I unplugged it from the wall fast like. I let it sit all this time till today. Being down and feeling low I got nosie today and open the thing up to see if I could see what was burnt, after opening it I plug it in and turn it on, sure enough it started smoking. I unplugged it fast. I started looking in the place I saw smoke but found no burnt marks, then I kept looking around in the general area and found a sleve that was hanging from a red wire, followed it up to a board, there I found 2 red wires hooked to the board next to each other, So I though maybe the slever keeps these 2 wires from touching, So I push the sleve back up over the red wire it was on and thought ok lets try again, plug it back up,turned the power on. so far it looked good. I then turn on the pre amp, still ok,then I tryed all stages from L-M-H still things looked ok. So I took it back out to the shack and hooked it up to the radio. Everything seems to be back in order. I tryed it my imax but got very hi swr. Tryed it on the A99 and it was ok, even under 1.5 swr with it on hi. God I hope it stays this way. Now all I need to do is get it back working on a new Imax if not I'll be still saving my penny's for a long time to redo my station. Some good news is better then bad news or no news at all just had to rant some 73 Starface CEF476 |

George, since you spotted no burnt components, the smoke may be from a board trace.was that on the powersupply board or the rf board? Next thing to check sounds like the coax and the Imax itself since the amp worked ok on the A-99.have faith, repairs dont always have to cost big bucks! TECH291 CEF#291/CVC#6 KC8ZPJ |

Dennis, I wouldn't know one board from the other. what do you mean smoke may be from a board trace? As far as the Imax goes Sinker came over a year ago to help me with that, thought it was ok butttt... anyway thanks for the input. Starface cef476 |

George, the rf board has the "pills"on it,on the left side sitting upright front towards you.by trace I ment the foil traces on the bottom of the circuit board. TECH291 CEF#291/CVC#6 KC8ZPJ |
