Well 307 or Tech181! The subject line asks the question. Is the Texas Star DX 667V a high drive amp? Or, more to the point, can I safely run my Voyage VR 9000 into it with maximum output on AM and SSB? I assume that the "62A" in the Copper item description means that is what amperage it pulls. Then this amp should be run directly to the battery. What gauge wire should I use? Also, what other mobile amps does Copper have in the 400-600 watt range that could be used with the VR9000? Thanks, your answers will help me select the best amp for the car! Harpoonman |

Thanks Vernon, Oh, is that 2 watts AM dead key? What about SSB wattage? The VR9000 peaks around 25 watts on SSB. Can the 667v handle this? I can reduce the AM output power to about 3 watts dead key, but the variable RF control does not seem to have an effect on the SSB output (I assume this is normal?). But, how about some of you other folks? I'm looking to install a moderately powered amplifier in the car with the VR9000 and I'm looking for any suggestions from you all! Don't be shy! What do you think would be a good and suitable amp to go with the VR9000? I like the look of the Texas Star models, but I'm not limiting myself to them. Thanks for you help! Harpoonman |

Two watts AM deadkey and swing what it will.My son is running a high drive Palomar 400 which can take about seven watts dead key but operates cooler with five watts deadkey. He also runs the Voyage radio. He is in Texas now and I don't remember whether the 400 has the ssb feature or not. |

Vernon, Thanks! You are being very helpful and I appreciate it! Now, what do you think about the Boomer 600 or even the Boomer 400? I've been reading thru the archives on the 600 and it seems like many folks have had problems with the 600 not unkeying on medium and high power settings or having high SWR, etc. Should I consider these amps with the VR9000? Also, this is for 307 or someone at Copper (or anyone who might know), how can I tell which of the mobile amps you sell are "high drive" and which are not? Hmmm? Thanks, Harpoonman |

I like the Texas Star 350 HDV "high drive". I've used one for 5 years now , & it's never had the cover off of it ! I drive it with a Ranger 2950 : the papers that "came with the amp" said to drive it with 10 watts AM & 21 watts SSB ! I put an AM dead key of 8 watts & swing 20 watts or so SSB . It will draw 38 amps on my 50 amp power supply, which is exactly what the papers said it would draw . It's clean sounding , and will do 350 watts or A little more "ON MY METER". The best thing is , you only have two 2sc2879's to replace if they go bad ! Price the replacement { including Labor }, on a 4 pill or better amp ; you may see it's just as cheap to buy another one ! I have 12 mobile boxes and the Texas Stars are some of the best I've ever used , "Great SWR readings" on all of mine ! Just My { 2 } Greyhound |

Hi all, Thank you Vernonott, Shadow 804 and Grayhound for your suggestions! I'll be looking closely at the Texas Star 350HD and the Boomer series, too. If any of you have any additional recommendations, please let me know. Also, feel free to e-mail me at "harpoonman@home.com" with suggestions or comments, if you feel shy about commenting here in the public forum. Thanks! Harpoonman |

I am really happy with my texas star amp. I got it from copper and I have had about six amps now. It is the clearest, lowest standing wave, and easiest to see when it's on. I like the lighted switches and the meter to make sure it's swinging up. If it's not you are probably distorted or something is wrong. It has alot better audio quality than all my other amps for some reason. Does anyone know why? |
