Well I just tried mine and it starts squealing before I got it to 2, but man it was bad loud before it started squealing, louder than I would want to run it. Maybe an external speaker would let you turn it up more. The mike gain, power setting or topgun modulator has no effect on the talkback on the omegaforce, just the talkback control. Even sideband or FM sounds the same on the talkback.

And if you have already made any modifications to the radio yourself, I would suggest turning down the 2 pots on the combination TB/Echo board. Usually, they do not have to be touched.

If you are using a power mic on this radio, turn it down. These radios are so loud, it is sometimes difficult to use a power mic on them especially if the Mic Gain on the radio is turned up beyond the 1 or 2 oclock position.

Comcrip,

my Delta Force is the same, my friends was the same, and now his new Omega Force is the same. All were purchased brand new.
As a side note, my DF had a legitimate problem with the AMT (squeal was not it). Sent it back under warranty and it was fixed, but yes it will squeal if even barely turned up.

I found it can be turned up a tad more if you key the mic farther away from the radio. Also, an external speaker placed farther away gives a little more room and can be turned up a tad more.

However, if you listen to the radio with headphones, that talkback is loud even at the lower levels. R/S sells a 1/8" mini plug that turns mono into stereo. Plug it between headphones and the external speaker on the back of the radio and it will give you audio in both headphone ears. I use my nice stereo headphones for the CEF NET and the audio sounds great. It's plenty loud then.

I think it's actually "normal" for these radios based on so many of them that do the same as yours.

You couldn't be more correct.

These radios have unbelievable audio. The Omegas even a bit more. That is why you have to be very carefull when running a power mic on them. Especially a D-104.

I have found that the best way to do this is to start with the 104 turned all the way down. From there, turn the 104 volume control up so the screw-driver slot is straight up and down, parallel with the mic-cord tension spring. Or, maybe a hair or two more.

From this point the mic gain on the radio can still be turned all the way up WITHOUT and squeal. BUT, with the mic gain all the way up, don't expect super-clean audio.

When using a D-104, I run mine as described but I have my mic gain set at about the one or two oclock position and can easily "feather" the talk-back control to a comfortable listening level without any squealing.

For those of you with audio squeling problems, don't EVER expect loud talk-back when using a power mic when the mic and speaker are so close together. It's just not going to work with this radio or ANY other radio for that matter!! A good noise cancelling mic works best because these radios have more audio and any other radio in the radio industry.

Al, these Magnum radios are the first to impress me since the original RCI-2950s. BUT, like the 2950s, their receivers could definatly be tightened up some. Other than that, I can't say enough good things about all of the cool features these Deltas and Omegas have.

As you probably know, no other 10 Mtr radio on the market gives you more features for your buck. I'm not easily impressed but these two Magnum SSB radios sure impress me. No cheap surface mount stuff in these radios. And what's the point in having a radio that has so many unusable frequencies? The frequency range of the Delta and Omega are at least usable.

Now all we need is a better receiver and a 100 watt amplifier under them like the old RCI-2970s. I'll be happy then.

Like I posted before, the mike gain has no effect on the talk back on the omegaforce. You can turn the mike gain completely off or wide open with a D-104, it makes no difference. Also the talkback is the same on AM, SSB or FM.

I just use the stock mike on my omega force, & you cant turn up that talk back up very much. Mine will just make a very low moaning noise if it's turned up a little too much. Keep the mic gain straight up at 12'oclock, that's what sounds and runs mine the best. Awesome radio!

Well I'll be darned....I am glad you got it fixed. I'm pretty heavy on the warranties of internet bought stuff. It's our hard earned cash we spend. I hope you were treated as well as I was.
