Can someone tell me what the differences are between the Cobra 139 and the 139XLR ? What does the "XLR" signify? I'm looking to buy a 139 and i need to know if it can be modified and also any other technical data anyone can provide. thanks very much Dave |

The 139 is 23 channels and can be modifiey by a crystal swith or one of them Siltronix external vfo things (I can't think of the proper name right now). The XLR is 40 channels and can be PLL modified. |

The old Cobra 139 was a crystal controlled 23 channel radio. The Cobra 139 XLR is a 40 channel PLL chip radio and can be modified. Both of them are AM/SSB radios. |

Gtrkid68 You will NEVER get the frequency range from the old 23 channel 139 like you will from the 40 channel 139XLR. The XLR was the new generation 40 channel Cobra SSB radio and far better than the old 139 ever hoped to be. The XLR version has the old (FCC-Outlawed) 858 PLL chip and will easily cover 26.085 to 28.045 plus all of the "A" channels. None of the newer GTL-Cobra's can even do that frequency range. The XLR versions were the last of the good (both AM & SSB) Cobras. Once all of the modifications (Power-Audio-Clarifier-Frequency-Broadbanding) have been made, this radio is a real a$$-kicker and CAN HOLD ITS OWN ON Sideband (SSB) against any dual final 10 meter radio. However, if you are a A-M'er and have no interest in SSB, the results of these modifications will just be a waste of radio since there are so many 10 meter "AM" radios out there that will outperform the Cobra 139XLR in the AM mode. Hey I have the Cobra 139 XLR and I got her new in the 70"s , she is modified with a Diga Scan frequency counter with a D104 Tug8 mike and in new condition, I would not be with out her. |

Karatebutcher I also have one that I kept fo myself that was a leftover in my shop from the mid 70s. Every once in a while I like to get ot out and play with it on the air. Like you, I have no intention of parting with mine either. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Yes they are really nice, I really like mine, I did have a Cobra 138 xlr in my mobil but someone else liked it, I use the 139XLR every once in a while, and with the D104 it really sounds good. The Diga scan helps also from Redco |
