Since getting back into radio after about a 10 year period without any interest in radio I have seen so much on the web about competition amps and competition meets. What exactly, or I should say, how exactly are they competing? Longest keydowns before blowing an amp? Longest Dx? Most watts? What is the deal? More often then not, Dave-Made, X-Force and Magna Force amps are connected to it. What exactly are these amps all about? What do they do that others don't? Thanks, Kattracker |

Kattraker...They way they compete is somewhat like this,First of all, there are different classes of competition. There is a 2pill,4pill,6pill,8pill,10pill and so on for single antenna. Then you have a DC sky which is pretty much run what you brung. Then you have an AC class.Guy's competing with tube amps in a moblie setup.Once the competition start's,they have a designated station anywhere from 6 to 12 or so miles away as a listening station. At that station a tape recorder is running. In each class two people key down for 10 seconds.Whoever is heard over the other at the listening station is declared the winner. Dave Made and X-Force are class C amps and can take volting up to but no more than 20VDC making then popular amps for keydown competition.Hope this has been helpful to ya! |

Theres more than that too, most have a dinner a dance trophies for best install imagine all the aspects of doing something and doing it right, and alot of people just getting together to talk RADIO. Like a hamfest without all the selling. You might check earpluggers web site he's got alot of links to others you can spend all day there and still not see it all. Im not sure if peekaboo and storm have there sites up now or not. |

Flybynight A few questions. How long is each Keydown? What would you say is the most popular competition antenna you see being used at these contests? Is there an entree fee? And if so, is it the same for each class? I find this very interesting. Thank you for sharing this information with us. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

kattracker now the new breed keydowns have not just one antenna, but 3 to five antennas(set up like a 3 element vertical beam.i run 2 (like a pdl 2 vertical)and i"am considered out dated)so i have"t keyed up in a while.no one really uses 2 antennas anymore sixkiller505 |

Jeff, the actual keydown time is 10 seconds. As far as most popular goes i cant answer that. But i have saw pleanty of Monkey Made's,55's, and stargun's.I personally run a Bad Boy in the single antenna competition along with a uniden HR2510 and an x-force x-200.I won the 2 pill single antenna competition with it a few saturday's ago.Like sixkiller505 said, the new wave is the rail beam antenna setup now. Most know as fighting stix.I've seen any where from 2 to 6 lined up in a vertical beam configuration. And some have 3 to 4 elements across the back for reflectors. Yes,there is an entry fee. That depend's on what class you're entering.Excellent sportsmanship shown at these competiton's also. |

Forum Master Note : I have blocked out the website in your post because it refers to a competitor of ours. However I emailed the address to Kc0gxz. |

I saw a suburban set up for key downs, wow! He had 5 leece-neville alternators, and a huge ac box that filled the back. He had a rail on the back that held 5 verticle antennas, they would go to the lakefront (lake erie) and shoot to a guy in Canada. |
