The very first 2510s had talkback, and it was not defeatable. Wasn't that stupid for a radio known for sideband. It wasn't a loud talkback, but you could hear it, and you know how bad sideband sounds on talkback. There was a fix came out, but best I remember it was pretty involved. I've probably still got the instructions somewhere. As far as echo, the little sadelta me-3 hand mikes gave the 2510 a nice sound if you ran just a little echo, thats for AM of course. scrapiron |

Stickshift, I feel the same way. I have had some great HR2510's and wish I had kept one. The audio is super. I ran a Kenwood MC43 hand mic on mine. 73's Barefoot |

Avight I have to agree with Scrapiron63. Just get yourself an echo mic and use it only on AM. By the way Scrapiron, they were defeatable. And I also wondered the same thing. Why was a talkback ever put in them to begin with. Made no sense to me either. 73s. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

OK I know everyone thinks its a bad idea to add echo to this radio(me included)but is it possible to add talk back and put it on a swith so it could be turned off? Mike CEF149 |

Rob5mike Yes, it can be done with a lot of work. But so far it looks as though no one here really wants to assist you in DEGRADING one of the best "TRUE" 10 Meter radios ever designed. And I don't mean that out of disrespect to you. On this forum you're going to find that the Lincoln and the old HR-2510s are probably the most highly respected radios being used today. If you really want something that has the features that you are looking for, I suggest you get yourself a Galaxy or something along those lines. The HR-2510s and Lincolns were designed for the serious sidebander. Galaxys and their clones were not. But, on the other hand, maybe someone WILL explain to you how to do it. All kidding aside, you have a far better radio there than you think you do. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Jeff,I do know what I have.I have done the cobra, uniden and galaxy thing, truck driver for last 20 years,I have heard and used alot of the so called BIG radios I now have a Delt Force and two 2510's.One 2510 I use as a base the other was given to me in really bad shape.I have been working on it for the past few months and have it working(still has meter problems)the reason I asked if Talk back can be added is because I am going to give this radio to a friend that is down on his luck but shows great intrest in these radios and he asked if it could be added and I told him I would try to find out. As for the"serious sidebander" I have one question.I am new to the world of sideband and plan on getting my ham ticket this winter, until then I'll be on the CB.But I have noticed that when I am on ssb on the CB channels if I don't talk like I am a ham operator I will get the cold shoulder or no answere at all.If this is serious sidebanding I don't get it.I thought CB was for the "10-4 whats your 20"crowd.I am not trying to start anything but it just seems odd to me. Mike CEF149 ps.I would still like an answere on talk back |

Rob5mike You are right. When it comes to serious sideband work, most operators shy away from the good buddy CB lingo. Sideband is a whole different ballgame. It far outperforms A-M in both transmit and receive. You hear only half of the channel at any one time. Either the upper or the lower half. So that means you are only hearing half of the noise that is out there also. No other form of communication is as efficient as sideband other than CW. With a good antenna, communications 50 miles away with a barefoot SSB radio is the norm. Most people that buy the Lincolns do so because of their great SSB capabilities. But, if set up correctly, your DeltaForce can out-talk your 2510 in the A-M mode. But the old HR still has a bit of an edge over the Delta and other 10 Meter radios on SSB. When set up correctly, the HR-2510 can easily have a sideband peak power of 45-50 watts. That won't happen on A-M. They also have one of the best designed receivers ever put into a 10 Meter radio. The HR-2510 was NOT designed with the CBer in mind. This radio was originally designed as a entry level real Ham 10 Meter SSB radio. They work hard and heat up quickly when used on A-M. There are just too many dual final radios out there that will run circles around them on A-M. But on SSB, now that's where the HR and Lincoln really shine. With all the button pushing you have to do to get around the bands along with the small frequency display, they make a far better radio when used as a base than they do when used in a mobile. I'm sorry. I really got off the track here. Getting back to the common "attitude" of people that you find on sideband, yes, they may appear to some as being a bit snobbish. But most of them are there to get away from A-M and all the CB stuff that goes with it. When using sideband, you'll notice that much of the conversations are more laid back. And you're not going to hear the (as you put it) "10-4 whats your 20" stuff. That's for the A-M CBer. The sidebanders have had enough of that. I'm glad to hear that you are working to get your Ham License. Good for you. After you get your Tech license and go 2 Meters, fortunately you're not going to find any CB-Goodbuddy stuff there either. However, CB does have its place though. Right there on Channels 1-40 where it's suppose to be. 73s for now. Jeff. |

Jeff you hit the nail on the head when you said some are "snobbish" And that is what I don't understand.yes SSB is a far better mode for communicating and yes it is much more laid back and more enjoyable to use, but its still CB if its on the CB band This includes sideband so if I don't use Q codes and try to talk like a ham should I be told that I am wrong and that I need to learn the ways of a "real" operator? Don't get me wrong, I'm not 10-4 good buddying(?)or anything like that just trying to talk a little skip when its in. Most of the people I've talked with are good people but there are some out there that seem to want to make it something that its not. Mike CEF149 |

Rob5mike You're right Mike. There are a lot of good people on the CB frequencies as well as the frequencies above and below the CB band. For many of them, being on the SSB frequencies above 40 is about as close to Ham radio as they will get. And many of them are well satisfied right where they are. Some of them have no desire at all to study for a Ham license. I only hold a Tech license but I'm still looking forward to the General because I'm not happy at all with FM repeaters. To me personally, (and I'm speaking for myself here), it amounts to nothing more than a glorified CB. There's no challenge on repeaters. I have more fun using FM simplex or even talking on my own business repeater. Right now, the only thing keeping me from the General is the code. But I'm still working on it and I WILL EARN that General. Don't give up on your quest Mike. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

I have a friend that has had his Tech license for about 15 years and is totally satified working 2 meter repeters. I am like you ,I don't see the challenge in it.When I get my Tech license I will be going for my General soon after. Thanks for the discussion Jeff and thanks for not being part of the "snobbish crowd" and as for my quest,Its all about having fun on the radio. Jeff I'll be QRT 10-4 hahaha Mike CEF149 |
