:confused; Color me....confused.
Just got this KLV-250 base amp with the KB-203 board. It powers up OK but I can detect no difference in signal strength when transmitting. The Watt meter fails to register, but I've been told that these RM meters don't hold up very well to shipping abuse. Despite this, the amp came packaged like no other, completerly encased in multiple layers of bubble wrap & ghost turds. I've looked over the two boards in this amp and can not detect any burned up circuits by smell or sight. The coax checks out OK (checked with Ohm meter) and the CB gets out OK with the amp on or off. It's just that others I've spoken with says there's no differece in signal strength. Oh, and I have a new meter on the way. Insofar as the amp itself, this is a KLV-250 transistor (as opposed to tube) amp. The KLV-250 is a base amp, and on mine it has the KV-203 daughter board. The lights come on OK and prior to converting it I had noticable lock gain on my Cobra 142 GTL's power meter. Since converting it though the 'lock' no longer occurs but no noticable power gain either. I am certain about the conversion too. Any ideas Tech 307?

Either Tech307 or Tech 671 should be able to help you much better than I. Either can be reached at tech307@copperelectronics.com (or) tech671@copperelectronics.com.

I had to go searching for the transistorized 250 but sure enough it's out there. You should definitely be seeing an increase, as should those on the receiving end. I can ask you a bunch of questions, but I don't know enough of the technical answers to help get it going.

I start basic then go up. Do you hear any clicking when keying up? How many watts are you feeding into it? Is the fuse on the amp intact and not blown? Is the coax properly hooked up and not reversed?

Sorry man, not intending to insult your intelligence, but sometimes it's the basics that cause problems. If it's truly an amp problem, the techs are the ones who know. Man I hate seeing problems with new equipment. Wish I could be more helpful. I haven't seen a lot of 671 or 307 recently. Summer months, they could be on vacation, having computer problems, business is busy, etc. Those two are a good bet though on the KLV amps. Tech808 might have some ideas as well, but if he saw this post, he would have answered if he had ideas on this.

I hope you can get it figured out and up and running soon. Good luck.

I have one question, has the amp you just recieved been modified for 11 meters? It sounds like it has not been modified.

1st. I've printed out no fewer than three schematics for this same amp (KLV-250) and two of the three show a four pin 'SERVICE' configuration, the third schematic shows no 'SERVICE' pins, whereas mine only has three, could it be that this amp is incapable of 11 meter ops?
2nd. This amp was modified by removing link for 'SERVICE' pins 1 & 2, and adding a link between pins 2 & 3, as per DRE CB's website.

Howdy 307, apparently I overdrove the amp. using stock output from my Cobra 142GTL. I am being told that I need a 'dial a watt'? convertor. I've never heard of these but have you?

Turbogus,

is it working now? Overdriving it should have allowed it to work before, but it would have gotten either real hot, or fried depending on how hard you were driving it.

A Dial a Watt is added into your radio so when you dead key, it's very low watts (like 1 watt), but once you start modulating it swings way up there. Also called Swing kits depending on where you are in the country.
