I was told this antenna is know good to run my new KLV 550 amp, he said the antenna from the 1970 will not take the klv 550 power, , the amp shows good power reading at the tech shop, but at home it is have power on the amp meter, what kind of stick antenna from Copper will work for me, Super Big stick, Amtron 99, I need a stick, so I can hide it, |

The new NBS-2010 5/8's wave army big stick claims it will handle 4000 watts. I don't think you will get interference from this top radiating stick antenna like you would from the Imax 2000 or A99 which radiates all over. I really don't know about the 1970 big stick, but I had a 1980's super big stick that did't handle power very good. Anyway, this is the place to get your answers. If I were putting up another antenna I'd probably go with the new Big Stick myself. The Imax 2000 is appealing being a full 24 feet long but I'm afraid of the tvi it might cause since it radiates all over. Dinker, who is on this forum, has one of the new big sticks and can tell you a lot about it. He's really pleased. mikefromms |

Karate...If you can stand the length go with the Imax 2000. You wont be sorry. I used to run the super big stick and I loved it....Until I bought the Imax. I will stay with the Imax until they stop making them. I am extremely happy with it. I will trade you a brand new one from Kentucky for your KLV 550. Heck of a deal for you. If you get a Imax you might even be able to talk outside of the city limits! |

Karatebutcher, are you sure on that? I know what coax you have, and what antenna, but am curious whay it can't take the power? Don't go for the Anton 99, there are better choices for your particular situation (for those that don't know, I am familiar with the setup and concerns that KB has. No offenses meant about the A99). I'm shooting you an e-mail. Alsworld |

This is not the super big stick nor regular big stick, this is the NBS-2010 Army specs big stick. The Imax 2000 doesn't work as well under heights of 30' as does the new big stick. The only way you will see any improvement over the big stick is to add the groundplane radials to the Imax 2000. The patterns are about the same on up in the air UNLESS YOU HAVE THE GROUNDPLANE KIT. Something the tech has made clear in his article in the user review section titled 'HOW TO CHOSE AN ANTENNA." In fact, go over and read the article, KarateButcher, and see what you think. mikefromms |

Thank you guys for the answers and Alsworld for the great e mail, Big Bob especially thank you. I will consider all these answers, but as I posted in Amplifiers, all the problems seen to have gone away after I took the amp for a ride, then rehooked it up with tight care, and testing each step, I do bleed tvi on my wifes cheap speaker phone, I will have to be careful with such big power, when to use it, have good swr, thanks again , really |

Karatebutcher If you're going to hide this antenna with the base of it being 30 feet or less from ground level, the Army Big Stick will work fine. For anything above 30 feet, go with the I-max 2000. And as with ANY fiberglass antenna mounted at 30 feet and under, EXPECT some TVI, with or without a ground plane kit if it's too close to a apartment building. And as with ANY fiberglass antenna PLUS 500 watts of power at 30 feet and under, I can PROMISE you TVI, with or without a ground plane kit if it's too close to a apartment building. If you live in an apartment building, I'd forget about using any kind of linear amplifier. You're just asking for trouble there. Amplifiers and apartment buildings don't appear to mix as well as Rum & Cokes do. Good luck to you and 73s. Jeff, kc0gxz |

Taz You are sooo right about the Army Big Stick. An antenna like that would NEVER hold up or even come close to meeting Military Specifications. When it comes to advertising, using the phrase "Military Specs" seems to be a very popular slogan to use these days in hopes of selling more of that particular item. Especially if you paint it in military colors. And I'm not only talking about antennas. I mean anything!! The kind of people that actually buy in to that (Military Spec) slogan have the tendency to believe EVERYTHING they read in advertisements. When you see something on the market that is boasting the M.S. slogan, BEWARE. More often than not, it's usually something that the military doesn't use, never did, and never will. And if they don't have it now, they don't need it. So what's next? Bottled water made to Military Specs? Later my friend. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Karatebutcher If you're not bothering anyone and no one seems to be complaining, then why hide it? Get yourself the I-max 2000. Mount the base of it 30 feet or better from ground level and let her hammer. It's a 5/8 wave, 24 feet in length, will out broadband anything on the market, and can easily handle 5KW of power. It's not even going to break a sweat with the 500 watts you're going to be pounding into it. The longer you are on this forum, the quicker you are going to see that there are more I-Max owners out here than anything else. Copper carries the I-max 2000. You can shop around but I doubt you're going to find it cheaper anywhere else. Copper is very competive as far as pricing goes. And they stand behind everything they sell. Not too many companys do that anymore. You won't be disappointed with them or the I-Max. 73s. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

was going to mention something about the old shakespeare big stick, ive used one for years now, 16 footer, 2 section, and i think the only problem ive noticed about it, is that its only rated at 300 watts rms, thats why you may get the drop you did, but the gain on the antannae is significantly higher than the a99 or new big stick. ive used all three types, and using 300watts there was no comparison in range to the old big stick. also ive noticed there is little to no tvi interference (65 foot in the air. also run ahr2510, and a silver eagle 350 mobile)battery and charger) i noticed almost double the gain over about a 50 mile range. |
