I RECIEVED MY klv550, AND IN TESTING IT THE METER ON THE FRONT, ON SETTING 6, WITH 15 TO 20 WATTS PEP IN, SHOWS ON THE METER 200 WATTS OUT ON THE KLV 550 METER, ON AM SETTING 6 AT 2,5 WATTS IN SHOWS 150 WATTS OUT, is this normal, I was also told to leave the amp on for 24 hours to let the 2 tubes harden, is this the RMS reading and not the Pep ,, please advise thanks |

Karatebutcher, The AM setting is pretty close (a little too much for me) but close. The SSB numbers are way low. Check that meter on the amp against another meter. My 550 is a little on the generous side. Maybe yours is stingy... Set the AM on your radio down a little more and get some radio checks. If they're good forget what that meter says on SSB. About the tubes... maybe the transistors like a break-in??? I didn't treat mine to anything special & if you've got tubes in there something veeeery strange is going on. |

Guys I went to the tech today a different one, it worked fine in his shop, really great, he asked me what kind of antenna I had, a two piece shakespear big stick that I bought in the early 70's, he said this antenna would not take the power from this amp,KLV 550, should I buy a super Big stick, or a Antron 99 from copper? |

I just took everthing off the radio, ran it straight from the amp to the radio, checked swr, good reading, it worked fine, perfect on all settings, I put the other stuff back on and really tighted all coax connections, and do you know that thing really works great, now I can put my mind back together,The meter really works good, Thank you very much guys for your help, if you ever need help ask I will send you Alsworlds phone number.

Just a note: A lot of the time the amplifier gets the blame when it is the installation. I know of a truck driver that bought two amps in the last six months. The first one he blew up because the antenna was mounted down low on the back of the cab of his truck. You should have seen the arc marks where the antenna was hitting his cab. The second one with twice the finals....He called up and said that it quit working and he couldn't hear anything. He checked it out and found the collars on the 259's were loose. And there were black marks on the male part of the antenna plug...!!!! He said the relay really stinks. I told him to replace the relay and hope for the best. I haven't heard back from him. MONK |
