Is a tuned up DX99 going to create too much peak power to drive the KLV-550? I'm pretty sure the AM will be ok but correct me if I'm wrong, but what about the SSB?

AND... When the KLV-550 arrives from Copper it should be good to go on 11 meter. What about 10-meter? If not, what must be done? Thanks in advance.

Set your am at 2.5 watts deadkey, set your ssb at 15 watts peak should be good to go,but keep VERY close track of the heat produced, the avg. drive of these pills is 2.5 watts each and there's only two of them, they are very high gain transistors(16db)so they don't take kindly to OVERDRIVE.My dad-in-law has a stock 142gtl driving his,on high 285 watts swing on am,600 on ssb.

Alrighty Bigbob, thanks for the response. I'll definitely keep my deak-key as low as possible, absolute minimum to drive it. I was under the impression that controlling SSB swing isn't possible as it swings to full potential with the needed mic gain. In other words, is it possible to cap off the peak swing on SSB or is it all or nothing on these radios. Im a 148GTL man so I'm adapt to having a minimum of control hehe.

I'll admit I'm ignorant of the controls on a dx99,but I adjust mike gain for an avg.peak of 15 on the meter,I do this with my dx2517 for boomer 400,crisp clear modulation no distortion from 10 miles to 90 miles,if I open mike gain all the way up my voice gets fuzzy and the amp gets hot, sure sign I'm over driving. So I keep it down, and when I'm barefoot none of the locals notice the diff.between 15 and all the way open. And depending on the rig most of the less expensive models don't have limiters with a fast enough attack time to clip all the peaks,so a few strays get through, you're peaking 15 most of the time, pow needle jumps momentarily to 20,don't worry you won't blow your expensive amp.The limiters on a 142gtl are good but not as good as,say,on a 520 kenwood, you get what you pay for in this life,so don't worry,be happy.Your friend Bigbob.

BigBob you do the exact same thing I do with the mike gain on ssb, with the DX2517. I run mine 10 to 15 pep on ssb, amp on , also I use my head set with the Talkback to keep it clear not fuzzy, with the mike gain, or it over drives, just my input
