Tech808 What kind of modulation is the 696 capable of? I curently have a 6 watt dead key and swing about 10. how high can I expect my swing to be once I turn up the modulation and drop the dead key back to 4 watts? Kevin kwick_73 (Golden Eagle) |

Kwick 73, I have the 1st Sargants set at 2 1/2 watts and it will swing 16 to 18 with 90-95% Modulation. We turn the Mic Gain down to run 90% Modulation pretty much all the time. Lon Tech808 |

I was thinking that mine was under modulated. After a little trip to my fathers today and a meeting with his Dosey meter I find that I have a dead key of 6 1/2 watts and swinging over 20. So I closed the lid without any modifications. Not to bad for just having the inital tune-up before I picked up the radio new. Kevin kwick_73 (Golden Eagle) |

Well I ran a test today and it's 5-1/2 watt dead key and swings 10. I don't like that. Tell me 808 what do I need to do to get this thing to preform the way that I want it to without overdriving it and making it sound like s***? I don't like getting under the hood if I do have to, but I feel like I need to, This radio is capable of more than it's giving me. Kevin kwick_73 (Golden Eagle) |

After the freq mod, what frequencies will the 696 F cover? Is it like the Grant or 148? |

Well, I'll be darned, kinda like a CB. For goodness sake, I thought it is a CB! Why would I put a switch in one just to cover the channels it comes with. I might sound a little ignant sayin', I just as well get me one dem Melakas. Znut |

Znut, Thanks for letting me know I messed up. I changed the freq's in the above Post. It is the 1st Sargant's radio so I just hooked it up and checked. Low ~ 26.695 Hi ~ 27.965 With the Two SPST Switch Modification. Lon Tech808 |

And the freq counter does its thing to let you know where you're at? Cool. By the way tech808, what have you heard about the new Magnum base, the 3200B? I wonder if it has the freq counter jack like the Melaka or if it has the one compatible with the FC-390's. |

Znut, Yes, Freq Counter covers everything. As for the Magnum Base 3200B, I have not heard anything about it and have no idea what it even looks like or what it has in it. I do know someone posted on it about maybe a week or two ago. You might try the search area. Lon Tech808 |

Znut I've also heard that one may possibly be in the works. If so, I surely hope it will not be a surface mount board. But, if it's anything like the RF limited Magnum DeltaForce board, it's going to be a killer base station. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

You are the man Tech808! Sorry to cause such a seguay. I did mention the competition for the Melaka, the Magnum S 3200B. I hear it has a fine and a coarse clarifier, as well as indicator lights for whatever mode you are operating on. Rumors are that the board is the same as the Delta Force and/or the Maverick. It must scream on AM and actually talk on SSB too. It'll be interesting to see if it is as good on SSB as the 696F. |
