Hi Haymaker, Simplest thing to try first is to replace C18, a 330 uF 10 Volt electrolytic capacitor. A 1000 uF at 25 Volts or higher is a more effective replacement. The 10-Volt rated capacitors are usually the first ones in the radio to fail. A Taiwan-made radio is probably old enough for C18 to be getting old and feeble. It serves to filter the power that runs the mike amplifier circuit. When it gets weak, audio will 'leak' from the power supply back into the mike amp, causing feedback. Turning down the carrier is equivalent to turning UP the mike gain, even if you don't move the Mike Gain knob. Reducing the carrier power makes the setting of the mike gain knob effectively higher than it was with a full 4 Watt carrier. If it doesn't help, you didn't waste a whole lot to find out. 73 |
