Can you match more than one radio to one amp?I have a Galaxy 99 and a old style RCI 2950 that I switch out in the truck.I like both radio's and I'll use one for a month or so and switch to the other but I don't have the amp and the 2950 matched so I don't turn the power on the amp with the 2950.I was told that you matched the radio to the amp not the amp to the radio.I hope this makes since.

Yes!
Adjust each radio to what you need for the AMP, then switch whenever you want.
I switch Radios a LOT! between cars & trucks.
The AMPS stay in the vehicle's but I change my mind a lot on the Radios.

Thanks Lon,I thought that would be the case but I had to know for sure.One more question,I have a Silver Eagle 200 and a 350 and I would like for the pre-amp to work without the main power on.How do you do this?Thanks again.SC |

Step the key to matching is:
Set radio so that with amp on max the output carrier of the amp is 1/4 of the peak. Simple as that.
Step further? If you have a method of measuring RMS power, try not to have the amp carrier exceed that of what it does forward (modulated) rms. For example say you have a KL203 that does 120w peak but 30w rms, don't go over 30. With some radios (the way they are tuned) this amp may back up at 30w, back the carrier down until it doesn't "back up" or have a knowlegeable tech retune the radio (not volt it) so it does have decent rms drive. |

Hi Stepchild,
So far as I know, the two Silver Eagle amplifiers you mention will not deliver a receiver preamp with the transmit side off. Making that happen would call for some re-design. Very few factory-made amplifiers will do this trick. Texas Star amplifiers are built to do it. That particular function is what makes a "remote" standby switch impossible on a Texas Star.
Every other amplifier I know that allowed "receive-only" preamp used a third relay in addition to the "transmit" relay and the "preamp" relay. I think that's the biggest reason you don't see this feature. The cost that it adds just won't make them sell any better.

For what its worth. its best to match the amp
to radio, via padding the input and trimmer caps
on the output transformer. to balance the amp to
the radio, therefore the carrier is left at 4 watts
on the radio, you end up with the cleanest sound
no distortion up close or away. my tech does it
this way. he is the best if you are going to run a
