PROBLEM:SIGNAL METER WORKS BUT THE RF/SWR METER SWINGS BACKWARDS WHEN IN RECEIVE,WHEN KEYED GOES TO 0. WHEN CALIBRATE KNOB IS TURNED OFF BOTH METERS DO NOT WORK. COULD IC 1 BE BAD TA6324?I REPLACED D86&D87 NO LUCK. COULD C161 BE SHORTED?OR C167? |

Sounds more like a fragment of solder has "splashed" onto the circuit board while some other task was being done to the radio, and the solder glob is bridging separate circuits together. Then there's the whole question of history. Have you ever witnessed these meters work? If not, who knows what kind of accidental damage may be in there from an attempt at modification or repair? Anyway, it's not just some common problem with a widely-known "quick" fix. 73 |

Aha! Finals got replaced, huh? You've got a solder short near the rear of the circuit board. Find the trimpot that sets the transmit side of the "S/RF" meter. It's really close to the final. Follow along the foil trace that leads away from the pot. I'm pretty sure that's where the solder "splash" will be. Looking at the near proximity of whatever work was last done to the radio has served me well when something like this happens. Not often, but once in a while, sooner or later. 73 |
