Hey Guys,
I found this mod on the net the other day and was curious about something. Currently I believe the Clarifier gives +/- 1Kc adjustment across the full range of the control pot. If the mod mentioned is performed would there be any sacrifice in being able to "dial-in" small changes. That is, now the change is frequency as the control is rotated is based on 2Kc/#degrees of pot rotation. The new change would be 20Kc/#degrees of pot rotation? If that's correct don't you sacrifice "fine tune" ability for range?

Yeah, I goofed. I posted the wrong URL. Anyway, the question still remains, for clarifier modes that expand the frequency range of the clarifier, do you not sacrifice "fine tune" for extended range?
Currently the unmoded radio would change the frequency by some number of Hz per degree of rotation of the control pot. If you expand the frequency range don't you also increase the number of Hz per degree of pot rotation, therby making it harder to fine tune.
As a potential solution could a multi-turn pot be used or maybe just a bigger knob on the existing pot?

The clarifer will act exactly the same. The switch will simply jump up (or down "depending on channel selector") 10kc.
For example: if your on channel 11 (27.085) and you flip the switch, you will now be on "11A" (27.095) or half way between 11 and 12 (27.105). You will still have a +/- 1Kc adjustment across the full range of the clarifier control pot.

Thanks for the info. So, I assume that this is a TX/RX mod, not just an RX. So, coupled with a clarifier mod that lets you adjust +/- 10Kc you could pretty much slide across the whole band?

Your thoughts are correct barracuda....You will sacrifice the fine tuning for the range. I did a clarifier mod to my 148 that was supposed to give me +/-6Kc but it gave me about +3Kc and -14Kc. This works ok for me because I only use it for a base but if I were to ever put it in the moble Id be in big trouble. You can get ten-turn pots which are literaly that...10 turn pots. I am seriously considering buying one for he 148. Digikey has them from $10-$15

Wouldn't you know the only multi-turn pot I have in my junk box is a 10 turn 20K. Time to get out the catalogs.

You may be right, but this thing is an old clunker from the '70s made by company called Bourne. It's almost an inch in diameter and almost 2" long not ncluding the shaft. I'm going to see if I can find something a touch smaller in the proper value, even though I don't hold too much hope for anything much smaller.

Barracuda, There is a simple mod which adds a switch to bypass a certain resistor in the clarifier circuit of the dx2547. With switch off the clarifier is stock - fine control. With switch on the clarifier is course allowing greater range ( 5 kc drop). This should work in the dx959 which uses same circuit board. I haven't seen this mod on the internet, but I will make a sketch and e-mail it to you if you want it. My e-mail address has changed so you won't be able to contact me except thru this forum. |

if the pots too long, measure it and cut the shaft to the same length as the original. use a vise with a cloth on it and carefully use a hacksaw and cut it and file it down carefully. |
