Rig here is a Ranger TR-969F. It will drive my Heathkit SB-1000 amp (3-500Z tube) okay but for full output power (1KW) I need to drive it with 100w PEP. What is a CLEAN, very CLEAN amp that will loaf at 100w PEP and about 50w AM dead key with 4 watts driving it? Maybe a Palomar 225 blue face? Thanks! |

50w carrier into a single 3-500? Now I'll make a recommendation based on my knowledge of drive to a single 3-500. Your 969 set at 1w carrier into a KL203 should give you about 10w carrier and 80-100w pep. Perfect drive for a single 3-500. Yes you will have to use a 10a DC power supply to run it, but it's clean and cheap. 2nd choice a KL200 base amp. |

Thanks! Who makes the "KL" amp line? 50w carrier is for "low power use" but not for driving the amp. Got to keep it low on AM when driven. She will overdrive on AM too easy and the heat will screw it up fast too. |

Okay, found the "KL" series amps. Now, what is the difference between the 200 & 203? The power is the same but I see the KL203 uses 3-RM3 transistors. What the heck is an RM3 transistor? |

The 200 uses a single sd1446. The 203 uses a pair of RM-3 transistors, similar but not the same as the mrf497, a little more beef to them. I prefer the pair of rm-3s. The "klv" 200 is a single 519 tube base amp. |
