I' have seen these new versions for sale, what are they like? It says they are broadbanded BUT it is fixed tuning..mmmmm. The reason I am curious is they are not that big, said to be 5/8 and are broadbanded, and not expensive. I await some response! Oh btw are they any good for DX?
Cheers

There are no performance differences between the new version and the original Astro Plane Radiator antenna.

The 5/8 wave is taken up in the element going vertically from the ring at the bottom up to and including the elements that make up the top hat. The combined electrical length of those combined elements is 5/8 of a wavelength at 27 MHz. The element that extends downward from the feedpoint to the ring is just the feed. Just like a gamma matcher.

It is fixed tuned centered on 27.200 MHz. The SWR will be very low all the way from 26 to 28 MHz. That is the design.

G' day, mate.

Thanks 833, It's hard to find hands on info on a lot of gear out there, apart from the manufactures own hype!
Appreciate it mate,

As far as working DX with your new Astro Plane, ANY antenna, including a piece of wire or coat hanger WILL work for DX as long as said wire or coat hanger is tuned to the frequency you are transmitting on.

The ionosphere doesn't know and doesn't care what kind of antenna you are using. All it does is reflect RF signals back to planet earth no matter what the RF signals are being radiated from.

I hope you enjoy your new Astro Plane.

For the money and overall usefulness, ease of putting up, small size, broaded-bandedness, and test best under 30', how do you improve on it? This antenna rocks!

does the performance of this antenna(astroplane) deteriorate after 30 feet in the air. in other words is it better to mount it low than hi. that is the message i am getting.

It appears that it is a hands down winner under the 30' mark but as some of the others go higher it no longer out performs them. I've seen and heard them up over 30ft and do a great job. I guess the AP begins to perform behine the I-max 2000 and Maco 5/8 once they are up over 30 feet. But it still out perform a lot of other.

Make sure you put the AP together right with everything tight and use good coax and make sure it is clear of any metal nearby objects.

I'd like to put one of those I-max's up about 70ft in a pinetree and blow major smoke! I will say that I'm getting really good reports on my AP and it hears very good to be so low to the ground.

It's a nice antenna, but I'm wishing now I'd just got an Imax 2000 or big stick (the new improved one) and not have to keep going back up on the roof. The hardware and instructions sent with the CTE Astroplane is poor.

Mike,

In one post you say "I will say that I'm getting really good reports on my AP and it hears very good to be so low to the ground. "

Then, in the very next post you say "I'm wishing now I'd just got an Imax 2000 or big stick ".

It is my suspicion that if you bought an Imax or big stick and put it up that low to the ground and as a result, had no signal on the horizon, you would be back on the board saying something like "I wish I had never gotten rid of that Top One, nobody can hear me over 3 miles away".

What you are experiencing is called frustration. That is understandable. I also understand that frustration leads many men to whine. You are certainly not an unintelligent man, you will get it worked out. And you will still be a 'big strapper'.

I'm hardly pleased with anything. Actually, I can go a little higher than I thought at first. You are right in what you say. I'm guitar player and you wouldn't believe how many guitar amplifiers I've bought and sold in just 4 years, since I went electric again. Good news though, I think I've found one to settle in on.
