can i use a 1N4006 if i dont have a 1N4001

That part was made with voltage (PIV) ratings from 50 Volts (1N4000) to 1000 Volts (1N4007).

The general rule is, a HIGHER number from that set will always replace a LOWER number. Just don't go the other direction.

Same rule applies to the common 3-Amp rectifier 1N5408. The 50-VOlt version is 1N5400. The 100-VOlt is 1N5401, and the 1000-Volt is 1N5408. The lower the last digit, the lower the PIV for that part.
