A question about AM operation with this unit... I am running a Galaxy 2517 with about 2watt DK into the amp. Owners manual says to tune Load and Tune controls for max output. If I do that, the deadkey out of the amp seems too high, and modulating the radio shows very little forward swing. I figured the amp should key around 40-50 on low, and 80-100 on high. My other KLV bases all seem ok with 1.5-2 watt DK, and this gives me the correct DK out of those amplifiers. Am I supposed to back down one of the controls on this amp to give it "room" to swing? If so, which one (load or tune) and in what direction should it be turned (clockwise or counter?) On SSB, tuning for max on AM and then switching to SSB seems to work fine, it's just that on AM the unit deadkeys well over 100 watts on LOW, with no room to modulate. Thanks |

Peak the tune and load controls for highest MODULATED power. If you peak the Load control on carrier, it will not reach full 'swing' when you talk. This will kill your modulation at the other end and make it sound terrible, to boot. Peak both for best forward swing. You will notice that the dead-key power is not nearly as high as it was when the load control was peaked on carrier alone. 73 |

Thanks, that works! The locals are impressed! (and fearful, lol) P.S. Thanks to whoever in the shipping department packed up my amp for delivery--UPS tried very hard to damage this one like the last one--the outer box was pretty scrunched up--but the inner boxes survived and the amp was not harmed. |
