Mine likes about 1.5 to 2 watt deadkey. Whatever results in about 60-70 watts deadkey out of the amp should work nicely. For SSB, I try to keep the peak input to the amp under 20 watts. (You probably wont see 350 watts, but I see peaks over 200 running it like that, and it runs cool and should be easier on the tubes. In my experience, one of the biggest holes people fall into with amps is being obsessed with the numbers game--the model numbers are misleading. If you push the amps that hard to try to see that number on a meter, you are usually killing your amp. Nobody ever hears the difference between 200 and 300 watts (except probably distortion from driving the daylights out of the equipment) on the receiving end anyway, so why worry? Find a good friend on a base a few miles away on a quiet night, and you can prove this. Ever since I learned this, I am alot happier with my station, and I get lots of compliments on how clear and clean my stuff sounds. |
