what radios have microparts and microprocessers like the 6300 and 6900 ranger? I do not like these radios and want to know what other are like this radio so I dont waste another chunk of money on another radio.was looking for a really good mobile or base like the dx48t,dx93t,connex 4800&4400,ranger 2980wx,2985dx,2995dx,2950dx,2970dx,maverick-24,dx2517.which one if any is has full microparts in them? |

waste another chunk of money?? i don't understand what you mean, everything is going to smt(microparts as you called them). they are much more dependable and stable than their 'legged' cousins. infact, cb/10mtr radios are about the only '2-way' radios still using the 'legged' components(and they won't be for much longer as 'legged' components are being phased out as i type this). but to anwer your question, all 10mtr rangers except the 2980 are smt and/or uses a microprocessor. i am pretty sure that the maverick is not smt, and the 2517 definitely is not. |

OKAY SS8541 I APPRECIATE THE ANSWER PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING IS GOING TO "SMT" WHAT DOES SMT MEAN ANYWAY? SO SINCE ALL THESE RADIOS ARE GOING SMT GUESS THEY WILL BE HARDER TO MODIFY TO GET THE MAXIMUM ????S OUT OF THEM. NOT SURE WHAT IS PERMISSIONABLE TO SAY HERE BUT FIGURE YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. 2-40????S.ANYWAY IN MY TOWN NOBODY THAT I KNOW HAS THE EXPERIANCE TO DO TO THEM WHAT I WANT DONE TO THEM. SO GUESS HAVE TO STICK TO THE OLD LEGGED COMPONANTS TIL SOME ONE COMES ALONG AND IS ABLE TO DO THE MODIFICATIONS THAT I WISH.APPRECIATE THE INFO AND NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE NEW "SMT" BOARDS. GUESS WOULDNT BE SO BAD IF NEW SOME BODY TO MODIFY THESE NEW "SMT" RADIOS. |

there is smt and smd, but both mean the same thing. smt is s-urface m-ount t-echnology, and smd is s-urface m-ount d-evice. both are the 'microparts' that you talked about. i see all over the net how no one can find local techs to work on these new radios. i have even seen a few older techs who i know good and well understand rf say that they do not like to work with smt's. to be honest with you, its really a mental wall for them. it is different, so it just has to be way harder. not so, after you get use to smt's. you don't need high speed, low drag gear to work on 85% of the smt components. i use 2 soldering irons and a desoldering pump to work on them, and this includes removing the ic's. the 85% is for the business band radios that i work on everyday. for the 10mtr radios you can work on 100% of the smt components with the items i listed above. these smt boards aren't quite as advanced as some of the business band radios that require high dollar equipment to remove shields and certain styles of ic's. well, you do need good eyes, and steady hands. so it is more of a younger mans game. and this could be why i see some of the older techs on the net say that they are not comfortable with smt's. they know that it doesn't take much at all to rip off a trace or solder bride components together. if their hands and eyes aren't what they used to be, then they are wise for staying away from them. the business band dealer i work for has seen this and now mainly puts us younger guys as the 'bench techs' for the newer mobile and portable radios. i'd like to make a booklet or vhs tape one day on soldering techniques for smt equipment. it seems like many techs and even hobbiest could benefit from it. but, i have all kinds of things i'd like to be able to do. maybe i can get it all done when we start having 48hrs in a day. as for why cbs/10mtr rigs are going to smt, it is because the rest of the electronic world is going that route. smts are cheaper, smaller, and cut production time. with cb being only a very, very, small part of electronics, they really have no say in it, and will be forced to go with the flow. ranger is already making the move. galaxy is going to stick with standard components as long as they can for the fact that they know most of their dealer/techs can not or will not work on smt's. but, they are already being forced to use a smt tx mixer since the standard component version has already been phased out. to make it as easy to replace as the standard version, they are placing it on a small pcb that then fits into the old parts holes. |

Ss8541 I thank you for your detailed explanation of my questions.I have learned something from it at least galaxy will try and stick it out for us.hopefully by the time galaxy is forced into the smt boards there will be some people that will know what they are doing with these next generation boards.hopefully in the future there will be books out to do modifications to these smt@smd boards.I guess the new model dx48t and dx93t are smt&smd boards. want to know for sure cause really interested in these radios{dx48t mostly} but if smt@smd is involved I will avoid buying them.Is it really the exact same board as the dx2517? as you say still legged cousins. anyway if can be answered would be much appreciated cause next week want to buy another radio but want to make sure that this radio is not fully "smt&"smd. thank you Ss8541. |
