if it is like the maycom boards(which i think it is), it will not work. those use a 'high side' vco freq scheme. the i.f. freq is still 10.695, but the vco runs 10.695mc higher than the rx/tx freq, while the rci/gal radios run 10.695 lower. so if you are on ch.1(26.965) it would show 48.355mc instead of the correct 26.965. |

as far as i know -all- of the current production freq counters are designed to work with 'low side' vco's based on the 10.695mc i.f.(rci/galaxy and all clones) and the 7.8mc i.f.(grant/148). if this -is- the case, then there is -no- current production freq counter that will interface with these. there are some programmable counters out there but you will pay much more than you will pay for these 'cb' types. |

Why would you want a counter when you already have a frequency display on the Tomohawk? 307 |

He probably wants one more digit for accuracy, but as I've said before if it isn't set according to the gov. bereau of weights and measures they're just close |

because like my friends cobra 2000 i want the frequency counter to move when i move the clarifier so i can get myself on frequency, they always tell me im off frequency and its a big task to tune into them.so if i can do this i can get myself right on frequency.307 dont you talk on 10 and 11 meters? ..or no?..seems like you dont sorry but most people that talk on the air know this...peace. |

Just tune your clarifier to your ear--When the other station sounds clear and natural, you are there. Unless something is wrong with your radio, it is supposed to transmit on the same frequency it is receiving on. If it doesn't, then another digit on a frequncy display won't help at all. Now if your clarifier only changes your receive frequency and not your transmit, then I still don't see where a counter will help you. In that case I would either modify the radio so that the clarifier adjusts both tx and rx, or get the radio set to frequency by a tech with real test equip and just tune in the ones who are off. If they say you're off, you'll know better and can help them get their radios operating correctly. |

Hey Swamper, they left one little drop of rain off of your parade here. The external "programmed displays" like the "256" will read correctly ONLY on ONE mode. Choose one, AM, USB or LSB. It will read wrong on the other two. Even if it WOULD match your "High-Side-Injection" radio, it would read WRONG on two out of the three modes. Kinda wastes that extra digit. The 356 is a plain-Jane external "inline" counter that only reads an AM carrier with the mike gain turned down. I wish I had the instructions for the 256 handy. It seems to me that the switches COULD be set to read correctly on this radio, using an "overflow" setting of the switches. The "preset" number was chosen to make it read as if you were on 127 MHz, but you couldn't see the "overflow" hundred's digit, since it isn't there. Sure wish I could remember what the switch settings were for that trick. Seems to me the "standby" reading with the '256 turned on and the radio turned OFF was 89.305, or something like that. 73 |

Well Swamper, I checked my file, and all it has is hookup data for tube base radios. No switch settings. I've been doing those "by gum and by gosh" for so long, I just don't have it written down. If you have a power pack you can hook up to JUST the PDC256 without the radio, set the internal switches to read 93.200. I'm pretty sure that's the preset reading, but I didn't write that down, either. Hooking it up to the radio, putting the radio onto channel 20 and twirling the internal preset switches until it reads 27.205 should work okay. Bear in mind that you will still need an accurate external counter to set the trimmer cap in the PDC256. No easy way around that step. 73 |

Oops, the preset number I gave you is for a Cobra 148/2000, not the Tomahawk. I'm pretty sure THAT one is 90.305. Pretty sure, anyway. 73 |
