New radio and added the frequency counter. When the amp is hooked up to power the counter reads 20khz off.Tried another amp and it does the same and the clarifier will not track when either amp is inline.Removed the counter and using an external counter the radio transmits 20khz off.It does this hooked up mobile or base. The radio works great just straight to an antenna nor do the amps do this with my other radios.Any clues?

Thanks and 73

My Euro 3900 external freq counter goes (went) all over the place when I key(ed) an amp. I checked out the situation with a RF ammeter, you know the kind you clamp around the coax or wire. Stray RF all over the place. I even got a little RF burn trying to trace it. I'm using a mag mount with a base loaded antenna. I wound a choke of 9 turns about 5 or 6 inches in diameter and tie-wrapped it real even and tight. Still had a little radiation from the sheild of the coax between the radio and the amp with the amp on so I did the same choke between the radio and amp.

Freq counter is stable even when I bang the amp around on SSB. SSB is fairly clean now.

The stray RF messes with the stability of these 3900 radios as well as the freq counters it seems like.

znut, you don't have to be a 'tech' or 'engineer' to be well versed in electronics or rf. that is what books and hands on experience/training will do for you. looks like you utilized both to fix your problem and possibly help a fellow operator.
