I have a Ranger F-25 dual final radio. It will only swing about 20 watts or so! Is this the best it will do? I have a Galaxy 73 dual final and it does well over 40 watts. Any help would be greatly appriciated! |

If you haven't checked both finals for a blown leg on one of them, that's a good place to start. There should be a quarter-watt resistor feeding the base leg of each final. I don't have the diagram handy right now, to tell you the callout number. If one of those resistors is popped, it will put that final transistor on "standby", even if that final is undamaged. Since this radio is AM/FM only, it should deliver a little more than the dual-final SSB radios. You can't make a SSB final as efficient as you can for AM/FM only. 73 |

73 what kind of power will i be looking at if this radio is set up correctly? It seems like the audio is a little muffled up! I can only turn the mic. gain to 12 oclock or there will be a lot of background noise w/a turner noise canc. And also a lot of squeling! I know Ranger makes a really good radio i just think its not set up right! I will not say on this post who set it up, but i bet if you took a guess you would probably hit it on the head! They have been posted alot on here with there radio problems! |

Sorry it took so long to get back, busy season is kicking in. If you used the same meter and the same dummy load to compare power, both radios should show within 20% of each other. If you used an antenna, and not a dummy load, you have to use the same CHANNEL as well. Otherwise, the comparison may be wrong. Seriously, if the audio has a muffled quality, that's just plain WRONG. A mike that sounds clear on the '73 should sound okay on this one. If I had to guess, I would say this radio was set up by a "meter-worshipper" as I like to call them. These folks will never LISTEN to a radio after setting it up. They just install every weird trick they know, all to get another one or two tick marks up the scale on his wattmeter. How many, and which of these tricks were done on YOUR radio? I can be pretty bold about guessing what breaks down in a WORKING radio that sounded okay before it quit. That's a whole different ballgame than "which three or four mods" of dozens has been put into this one radio. Too many possibilities. Checking the "base" leg of each final transistor is where I would normally start, after making sure the modulator isn't holding back both finals AND driver. If you have a scope, that's a really large help. It's been too long, now since I was too young and/or too poor to have a scope on hand. I really can't tell much about a radio without one any more. 73 |
